Battering down on the windows, the rain comes down in droves
Like the sound of many heartbeats?
That's not quite right; let me try again
Rain is just rain, unique to itself
It makes some gloomy or terrified or elated
Rain makes me calm, even during shuddering thunderstorms
Like the raindrops dampen and still my heartbeat
Drowning out all other noise
It makes me want to lie down and watch and listen
For the drops sliding down my window
And the trees waving outside
And the needle-like points as drops shoot past lit streetlights
And the flashes of light in thick clouds and my dark room
And for the seconds in between that and rumbling, grumbling thunder
I close my eyes
Wrapped in warm blankets
