I walked out to the kitchen to find Min Ho cooking. He looked up and laughed
"You are angelic in the morning" Min Ho said
"Who is this from?" I asked pointing to the blue gift basket
"Uh my mother. Gifts are my love language" Min Ho said
"That tracks" I said and Min Ho hummed
"Whoa Pepero" I said reaching for something in the basket and Min Ho slapped my hand with his spatula
"She sent it from Los Angeles since she wouldn't be here. We usually spend chuseok together" Min Ho said and i nodded
"That sucks. So she'll be alone?"
"No. john cho is having a thing" Min Ho said as his phone buzzed "oh lulu, about time"
I lifted up a pot lid and looked inside
"Don't touch anything" Min Ho said "got a method" and i raised my hands in defense and put it back
I walked around the counter and looked at all the stuff he was cooking
"You know, you are the last person that i would expect to know how to cook" I said "or like do anything remotely helpful, their are these tiny microscopic moments when i can see why Dae is friends with you" I poked his chest "there's an actual person in their, Kitty was right in a way"
"Don't try to get me on your guy's side. I'm famously anti kitty. No matter how hard Dae and you work to sway me"
"Hey, have you heard from him today? Is he okay?" I asked "Chuseok, family, ancestor stuff. It's hard on me it's gotta be hard on him as well"
"No I haven't. It's a difficult holiday for him as you know"
"Yeah" I whispered
"And you?" Min Ho asked
"Me what?" i asked
"You must be thinking about your mom too" Min Ho said "a lot this week"
"Yeah, I am" I said, slightly surprised. In the years since our moms passing people tend to forget I was affected too. Because dae and i had different grieving methods. He had sit around a mope and cry, and I had make her proud.
"But in a good way. I can feel her all around me here" I said "thanks Min Ho"
"You're welcome" Min Ho said and we looked at each other for a moment. Until we both cleared our throats
"Maybe i should have kitty reach out to Dae, even though it's super awkward" I said "and she doesn't know what to say, or how to say it, but i feel like this trumps their other stuff"
"Agree. Gifts are always appreciated on Chuseok, even for ex pen pals" Min Ho said "pass me the gochugaru" and i handed it to him
"I'm really excited for this whole friendsChuseok" I said
"Really?"
"Yeah! Like all the people i've met this year are all going, as are all of XO team" i smiled and Min Ho's face fell
"All of the XO team?" He asked
"Down to the last manager" I said and Min Ho nodded.
Kitty was out in the kitchen making her mashed potatoes when I got a text from dae.
"Oh damn" I whispered
"What?" Kitty asked
"Yuri showed up at Dads and brought a gift...for mom" I said and Min Ho sighed.
"Wow" Kitty mumbled
"She didn't know," I said, closing my phone.
This holiday is hard as is without people pushing it in our faces
Min Ho got a text and read it "confirmed Lulu will be at the premises at 8pm"
"I'm sure she will love the chocolate" Kitty said
"The chocolate was actually for someone else" Min Ho said and Kitty gave him a judgy face
"Hey! Dont judge! Not all people need to be star crossed lovers to be compatible"
And I nodded. Okay that one hurt a little.
"Right like Kika and Jin" Kitty said and I winked at her.
"Like, hot people, for example, we can and want to play the field" Min Ho said
"That's just because you haven't found your perfect match" Kitty said
"I've found many, many matches," Min Ho said. Way to sound like a hoe, Min. living up to your last name.
"I'm just saying, i've seen the magic when people find the one" Kitty said and Min Ho shook his head
"Mhn mhn my parents both thought they found the one. They were the 'it' couple. Beautiful, young starlet. Chaebol heir. The tabloids literally called them the perfect match. Look at them now"
"I'm sorry" Kitty said "here try this" she scooped some of her mashed potatoes into a bowl and Min Ho took a taste
"Mhnn okay" he hummed in agreement
"Its must be weird to have people know all about your family" I said
"They think they know, they really don't. That's my point" Min Ho said "there's really only one thing that matters at the end of the day."
"Which is what" I asked, twisting to look at him a little
"The truth" Min Ho said
"Yeah your right" Kitty said
"Finally some appreciation," Min Ho said, but Kitty's face looked more like she just discovered something. Wonder what it was.
