NYC
Nathaniel was in the central jail, spending his time in a moment of calmness, in a state of lull, away from people, from tension.
He was serene there but the slipping time was dreading everyone.
Staring at the floor devoid of emotions, he sensed footsteps approaching him, curling his lips upward, he smiled.
Looking, he saw De Villiers looking at him with a blended look of fury and sorrow but hiding it behind the walls of coldness.
"Did you meet Prince?" Nathaniel asked before De Villiers could become sentimental and start scolding her and resent Zariah.
"Yes. I did. He was infuriated but I barely controlled him." He hummed, folding his arms when he stopped in front of him.
"What did he say?" Nathaniel asked, intrigued to listen to Prince's words.
" 'I told you, stay away from that woman, she is not what you remembered, that woman is not worth it.' That's what he said."
"And Cinzel?" He asked, ignoring what Prince said. He doesn't want to stumble his mind across needless worries anymore.
"Tell Nathaniel my exact words, 'If she wasn't the love of your life, I would have committed murder a second time.'" De Villiers said calmly but Nathaniel imagined how infuriated Cinzel might be.
"She sure got emotional." Nathaniel chuckled dryly, shaking his head.
"I shouldn't have left you alone in the first place." De Villiers frowned, furious to see him like this.
Smiling purely, Nathaniel lowered his gaze. Eyes affixed on his empty hands to display not the weight of obligations on his palm nor authority emptied his soul.
"This silence is so peaceful. The nightmares don't follow me here." Nathaniel whispered, curling his hands in a fist and they no longer remind him of his powerlessness.
"You are beyond saving." De Villiers sighed in disappointment.
He wanted to do something but knows that path he had chosen is his only redemption.
"The person I wanted to save was beyond it too. But at least she is now independent, holds emotions. I have saved her from her darkness. I don't have to be vexed about her anymore."
Breathing out, Nathaniel's smile grew wider, tilting his head to stare into nothingness, closing his eyes when her face flashed before her eyes.
"And the aftermath? Who will handle it? Are you planning to leave the mess of your work behind?" De Villiers asked sternly.
He knows how insane it would drive others to take the empty position and things would be terrible.
"It's no longer our concern. We have involved ourselves in this life for a devilishly long time, De Villiers. You, me and Amanda, we are done." Nathaniel trailed off, sighing deeply.
Running his hand in his hair to push them back as the distress was clear but not for himself but Zariah's survival in this den of beasts but he had no choice.
"I... am tired now. I don't want to walk anymore. I want to sit down and rest now. I.. don't have enough strength anymore." Nathaniel confessed sorrowfully.
He needed the void people fear to consume him, he wanted to be submerged into nothingness to find his liberation far from this world.
"I want a normal life now. Let her stay in this world but I can no longer do it." Nathaniel whispered, sharing his intentions.
"Are you sure about it?" De Villiers asked hesitantly, he knows he can't live without the mention of Zariah- leaving is a distant matter.
Can he truly maintain his distance from the person who serves his lunacy as a heartbeats?
