"Where are we going?", Soap asked as he sat in the back of the black Range Rover.
"Cartel safe house, a few miles from here.", Alejandro answered from the driver's seat. "We've got good chances of being successful."
Wrapped in his mysterious silence, Ghost gifted him a quick glance from the side before he threw another into the rare view mirror to check on the caravan of cars that followed.
"The cartel and terrorists?", you asked in a mocking manner as your eyes followed the car in front of you in which Alejandro sat.
After your talk he had asked to drive by himself to have some time to think things through. Of course you had not denied his request. He had a right to process things in his own speed.
You drove with Rodolfo instead. He was behind the wheel.
For the majority of the ride he had kept his mouth shut. Even though he did not want to talk about it it was obvious that the events had taken a toll on his mental state as well.
You didn't know much about him but enough to know that he had kids himself.
"Don't worry, I'm sure your parenting skills are better than mine.", you tried to lighten the mood with some humour but this situation was difficult to work with. "Your kids are fine..."
His lips curled. Then, for the first time of the entire ride, he let his gaze wander over to you.
"So we won't talk about what happened between the two of you?", he asked with a shrug. "No?"
A bitter smile conquered your face.
"What do you want to hear?", you asked with a shake of your head. "That I'm despicable? A narco?"
"Oh, no, I knew that you were a narco right from the beginning."
Struck by surprise, your eyes widened.
"You did?"
"Si, claro. Well, I didn't know know. But it was the only possible explanation why Alejandro fell for you so quickly. And so hard."
A soft chuckle managed to chase away the shadows from your face.
"You're such a gentle talker.", you hummed. "But I see why he thinks of you like a brother."
"We went through highs and lows. He was there when my oldest was born. The first man he killed was to protect my life. I owe him loads."
Sighing, you let your head fall back.
"I owe him everything.", you said as your eyes wandered out the window to watch how a mule of praise to El Sin Nombre passed by.
The sight made your body grow goosebumps all over.
"Can I ask you something?", Rudi asked all of a sudden.
Torn from old memories you looked at him from the corner of your eyes.
"Hm?"
"Do you love him?", your gazes met.
For a moment you just stared at him, now word left your lips, but a slight smirk tugged at the corners of your mouth.
"If there is anything I've ever loved, anything at all, it's him.", you said with a smile and a voice so soft that it took Rodolfo by surprise. "I had many years and even more opportunities to turn my back on the cartel. But I never did it because deep down I knew that it just wasn't worth it. Not until I met Alejandro. He gave me reason."
His lips curled. With his attention turned back to the road Rudi followed the car in front and turned into a small side alley to dodge one of the cartels street blockades.
Silence spread once more. But this time it did not feel as judgemental as before.
"Even though I don't know you as well as I'd like to I want to give you a word of advice. As someone who knows Alejandro since forever.", Rodolfo said after a while. "Do not think about what could happen if you tell him something about your past. Think about what happens if you don't."
"Alejandro is a man who cares about trust and truth.", you wiped your eyes, a hint of exhaustion made them go heavy.
"Exacto. That's why you should tell him the truth. No matter how ugly it is. He'll forgive you."
Now you couldn't help but huff with amusement.
"And why would he do that?"
"Because he loves you."
Those words made you swallow hard. Unsure, you looked at the car in front, in which Alejandro sat and tried to catch some movements through the tinted windows.
He had been so angry with you. The look on his face had been something entirely knew about him. It had made doubt bloom.
"I... wouldn't be too sure of that anymore.", pained, you squeezed your eyes shut to avoid shedding more tears.
The caravan of military vehicles crossed the city borders. Houses faded and wide landscapes of trees and fields appeared.
Colours faded and instead turned into a sandy gold and dry red.
The urge to roll down your window and take a deep breath made your fingers twitch. But you resisted, since it could have meant taking a risk. The windows were strengthened with bulletproof glass. One or two bullets wouldn't be able to do harm.
For a while all the cars drove down the same road until it turned into a more rural path. At a crossroad they parted.
One car took a left and another a right turn. Rodolfo kept following the car in which Alejandro sat.
Mountains appeared in the near distance.
You frowned.
"I know this place...", you mumbled more to yourself and sat up straight to get a better look.
"For some reason I don't doubt that.", Rudy said sarcastically.
You couldn't help but chuckle.
"What are we looking for?", you stretched your neck.
The two cars drove down a tighter path. Rocks rose into the sky like a gate that the mountain once had created itself in order to scare away unwanted visitors.
But for the longest time the most unwanted of visitors used it for their purposes.
Houses appeared, old looking.
"His name is Hassan.", Rodolfo stopped the car. "He's with the cartel. We don't know why but as of now the international governments categorise him as a terrorist. That includes México."
