"Estás loco?!", Alejandro yelled and jumped out of cover with open arms in an attempt to catch you.
Wind chased through your hair. It felt like heaven and hell were so far apart as never before and you were caught right in between.
Struggling, you reached out, desperately, and managed to grab the rope with bare hands.
Unsecured and with no protection whatsoever, you slid down while heat and tension peeled the skin off your palms and made them bleed and burn.
The pain bit into your flesh, seeped so deep into your bones that it felt like they were about to splinter.
Your vision blurry you managed to throw a look into the depths. Alejandro's worried expression appeared, tormented by worry and the fear to catch an entire grown person.
As you deemed the fall not fatal anymore, you gave in to the suffering and let go of the rope completely. With a deep breath you squeezed your eyes shut and mentally prepared for the impact.
The gear that you wore wasn't heavy but it did put a good amount of weight on top of your body. It wasn't painful as you landed on your back, right between bushes and stones. But it was enough pressure to push all the air out of your lungs for the next minute or so.
Coughing and gasping, tears rolling down your face, you tried to turn from your back to your stomach but failed as the lack of air, mixed with pain, paralysed every single cell inside your body.
All you could do was look up to the edge of the plateau, where heads could be seen in bright headlights. They pointed down to you, obviously they had spotted unwanted guests.
"My fucking god are you fucking trying to give me a heart attack?!", all of a sudden Alejandro's face appeared between blurry spots and shouting silhouettes. "Are you alright? Speak to me!"
Your eyes moved to look at him, empty, broken and disoriented. Your lips trembled as you raised your hand to caress his cheek.
A bloody stain was left.
Your hands were wrecked, totally shredded and burned as if there was a fire raging in your palms.
Alejandro tried to make you look at him once more, wanted an answer, a simple response.
Your eyes moved past him.
One of the shadows pointed into the depths. No, it wasn't a hand that pointed. It was a gun.
"M-move!", you managed to press out with your broken voice.
He understood immediately.
Before the first shot even rang out Alejandro rolled away, you kept tightly in his arms and hid inside the bushes.
Bullets started to rain down from the sky. Stones shattered under the force. Dust filled the air.
As the sound of war pierced your ears, Alejandro held you tight, his arms wrapped around you as if they were a shield to keep every single bullet away.
You could feel the beating of his heart against your skull. His breath was like an echo that kept you sane.
But at the same time people started to shout. For a brief second the rain stopped.
You had barely enough time to catch your breath as Alejandro jumped to his feet, pulled you up with him and picked you up your feet to rush across the field and to the cars.
Rodolfo was already holding the door. He shouted, wildly gestured.
With a gasp, you were thrown into the back of the car, almost slid between the seats and got stuck. Alejandro slammed the door shut and jumped into the passenger seat.
The engine howled.
Tires squeaked and within a second the car chased towards the road, out of the danger zone.
Metallic sounds hit the trunk. It sounded like hail but in the back of your mind you knew that it was bullets.
Disoriented, you looked around, managed to grab the seat in front and pulled yourself up.
"Where is Valeria?!", you asked, short breathed and still out of yourself from the pain that your bleeding palms caused.
A huff escaped Alejandro.
"You just fell from the sky and all you can think about is her?", he asked in a sarcastic manner. "I should be offended."
With an apologetic smile you pushed his face away but pulled back as soon as you realised you got blood all over him.
"We risked a lot to get her.", you reminded him.
"She's with Ghost and Soap.", Rudy said and took a sharp left turn to split from another vehicle that drove in front. "We have to split to win some time. They'll escort her to the base."
"They will send an army to get her back."
"Mi vida.", your husband grabbed your hands to calm you. "We got her. That's what counts now. The base will hold against some narcos."
You took a deep breath. Your blood seeped through his fingers and onto his pants.
"Fine.", you breathed a kiss to his forehead before you sat back and grabbed a seatbelt. "Rodolfo, I hope you know how to drive."
"Si.", Rudy huffed. "Stole my dads car when I was young. Drove some street races."
"Yes, he almost killed us.", Alejandro rolled his eyes. "Twice."
"I think it was three, if we count the time where we got into a shootout?"
"Puta madre, you two have some wild stories...", you kicked the drivers seat.
"Says the narco...", Alejandro shot back.
"Sin Rosto.", you raised your chin to gift him a cocky grin.
"I see the two of you have grown into the truth.", Rodolfo hit the breaks to be able to take another turn that led back into the city. "But we really need to get out of hot water right now."
You threw a glance behind your back.
Two cars had made it close enough to be considered threats. However, there wasn't as much trouble as you had expected from the cartel.
From the distance it was hard to tell but you guessed that those drivers weren't the biggest fish in the cartel sea. They were most likely just some of Valeria's guard dogs.
"We should avoid confrontation.", you turned back to address Rudi. "Try to loose them in traffic. As long as they didn't see you nor Alejandro they won't know who took Sin Nombre."
"You sure?", Alejandro frowned.
"No.", you swallowed hard. "But it's our best chance."
