Lydia- The Pet Communicator
Chapter 19
My father and I, rushed to the parking lot, although we were worn-out physically. We were literally dragging ourselves there, since we couldn’t let anything happen to lucky. We loved him a lot. I was really disappointed with my father’s actions. How could he leave Lucky alone in a locked up car? In no time, my eyes fell on Lucky in the car. He was barking and jumping on the car seats, “Hey! Somebody, please open me up! I can’t take breaths!”
I snatched the car keys from my father’s hand and ran quickly to unlock Lucky. I was also happy to see him alive and safe. Without hindrance, I brought him out of the car and hugged him tight. “Are you okay Lucky?”
Lucky yapped quickly, “Your father locked me in the car because, he didn’t want me to follow him.” I looked up at my father in displeasure. He beamed at me tensely, confirming that he locked Lucky in purposely.
“Dad, you didn’t have to lock him! He wouldn’t follow you, if you asked him to stay here.”
“I told him to stay back, but he wanted to be a doggy saint. He didn’t want me to fight with anyone, and the fact is I forgot that he was in the car, waiting for me!” My father responded immediately.
I sighed frustratingly, and gave Lucky some water by filling it in his dish. We always kept some water for the pets in the car, with a drinking bowl. Anyhow, Lucky couldn’t drink the water properly; he started coughing and snorting badly.
“I am so sorry Lucky. Do you want me to take you to the veterinarian?” I asked, but Lucky didn’t answer back. He closed his eyes and gulped mouthful of air. I could see his chest rise and fall rapidly. “Lucky?” I slapped on his face several times to wake him up, but he didn’t respond. I was determined to rush him to the veterinarian.
“Dad, let’s go to the veterinarian. We need to rush!” I shouted with fright. My father nodded. He carried Lucky inside the car, putting him on the back seat. We quickly sat in the car, and drove off to the veterinarian.
I also remembered that I have tied Marwa to the fence. I banged my fist on the front of the car, and gnashed my teeth in nuisance. My father lost his job, Lucky was unconscious and Marwa must be tired waiting for me all long. I asked my father quickly, “Dad, Marwa is here too. How can I leave her?”
“So? Just ask her to follow our car Lydia. We are having an emergency!” He spoke, while driving the car speedily.
“But, we are going to the veterinarian, right? How will she follow us all the way there?”
“Lucky is our priority at the moment, and once he has been admitted, you could take Marwa home with you. I will bring back Lucky with me, after his check up is completed. I really made a stupid mistake.” My father spoke furiously, and then gave out a loud sigh. My father changed the direction and drove back to the company.
“Tell Marwa to follow us carefully, so that she doesn’t get lost. I will be driving fast, okay?” My father insisted.
I agreed with him. When we reached back to the company's gate, I got down the car and ran towards Marwa. I untied her and gave all the instructions, just as my father demanded. Marwa asked me a lot of questions, however I couldn’t reply them all and told her she would get to her answers, once we reach the animal hospital. Shortly, My father drove off and Marwa followed right behind us. I smiled at the thought of having such superior and obedient pets. I really loved them all, and kept praying for their safety.
When we reached Blue Cross, my father carried Lucky in his arms and hurried inside. I waited for Marwa at the lane and come up to me in a little while. She stood next me, whilst lowering her gaze and grunting bit by bit. She looked really tired too.
“I am so sorry Marwa, it’s your meal time and you are here with us. The other pets must be hungry too.” I spoke in distress and continued, “Can you wait here for some more time? I just want to hear what the vet has to say about Lucky?”
“Yes, I am here. Take your time. I am not hungry, but worried about Lucky.” Marwa neighed slowly. I tied Marwa on a tree outside the Blue cross, and rushed in to check up on Lucky. I looked at my father who was sitting on the chair near Lucky, he was disenchanted. He kept on rubbing his forehead and chewing his lower lip nervously, whereas the veterinarian was checking Lucky.
“Your pet has had a congestive heart failure, I am afraid he will be kept under observation here for at least two days.” The nurse spoke promptly.
A tear rolled down my cheek. I felt like my world has ended when the nurse gave the result, I realized how much Lucky meant to me and consequently, negative thoughts started running on my mind. I needed some fresh air, so I decided to drop Marwa home. “Dad, I will drop Marwa home okay? Will you wait here?”
My father nodded- tight lipped, he was speechless and I could see the guilt on his face. I didn’t wait for his answer and moved out immediately.
The ride with Marwa was hushed. When we reached home, my eyes fell on Drake who was sitting at my door step. He got up, and wiped off the dust from behind his clothes as he noticed me arrive.
“Where were you? I tried to call you several times but you didn’t even answer my calls. I was so much worried about you.” Drake spoke anxiously, while jogging towards to me.
I got down from Marwa and started walking her to the shelter wordlessly. I had nothing to reply. Drake followed behind me and spoke irritably, “I am asking you something, where were you?”
“What to reply you, Drake? I have so much in mind at the moment. I am tired of my life. It’s better if you leave me alone for some time. I have also decided that I won’t study furthermore.” I spoke angrily, while putting Marwa back at her place.
Drake held my shoulder tightly and yelled, “I want genuine answers okay. This won’t do!”
“So listen! My father lost his job today and because of his foolishness, he locked up Lucky in the car. Lucky is at the veterinarian right now, he got a congestive heart failure and will be under observation for two days.” Drake pulled me into a tight hug. I wasn’t crying this time, I was just numb, maybe because I am getting used to with the pains in my life. “Everything will be fine sweetheart, I promise.” Drake assured.
I pushed Drake away in constant worry, “Nothing will be fine. My father lost his job and wife because of me. I can’t go to the Cambridge University anymore as my father lost his job. I can’t pressure him with my studies and all the funds for the animals. How will we manage everything?”
Drake grabbed my arm and pulled me into a hug again, “Count me in your life baby, I don’t want any tuition fee and I have got a lot of savings, so we can use them for your studies.”
“Drake, you have already done a lot for me. I can’t let you do more, everything has a limit.”
“You just have one more month for your exams, what will you do?” Drake looked at me worriedly.
“I don’t know. I give up. I give up on everything Drake. I will be with my pets and just baby sit them.”
“You know what? I knew Lydia as a strong girl, not a coward who will just run away from her problems.” Drake walked away heatedly, he didn’t turn back or look at me. All I knew was, I disappointed him a lot
