Lydia- The Pet Communicator

Chapter 33

I was shocked to see my mother running into my father’s arm, and holding him closely. She was crying and begging him for forgiveness, but my father walked away from her because of his long term disappointment. He stood at the window and looked outside, trying to control his heartrending emotions.

My mother sat on her knees and started crying out loud in front of us. I didn’t speak a word as my father was there to take care of whatever was going on, and I didn’t find it correct to speak between them.

As I thought, my father looked at her with pity. He gave out his hand for her to stand up from the floor and he wiped her tears away, using his handkerchief and mumbled, while looking into her eyes deeply, “What do you want from me? I have nothing to give you Grace.”

My mother shrieked all at once, “I want you and Lydia back, Peter. I was wrong and selfish all long! I just want a chance from you both, please? I apologize for leaving you both and I regret a lot more, after knowing the torments going on with Lydia. I didn’t do anything to help my daughter and I was a selfish egoistic slut. I knew Clara has burnt the shelter with the help of Vivian. Also, he had bribed the doctor at Blue Cross to not save Lucky, because that dog was giving Lydia all the information she needed and he was the closest pet to her. I just hate myself for staying quiet all the time. I even tried to stop them indirectly many times. Moreover, Vivian promised me that they will end this enmity soon, but they kept on doing worse things. I had enough of it! I took a step before it’s too late. Today, I came here on my daughter’s birthday to be with her forever as a good mother, and also a good wife. I left everything behind.”

She started slapping herself, while crying with guilt. I didn't even believe her for a second. She was just trying to be a good actress in front of my soft-hearted father. I got irritated, so I shouted at her after she got done with giving her long excuse, “You are still lying! Don’t try to trap us in your sweet talks. Just go away!"

“No I am not, Lydia. Tell me, why did I come back here after you chased me off? Why did I tell you the truth about Clara and Vivian?” She immediately replied, while gritting her teeth in frustration.

“Dad, don’t listen to her okay? She has hurt us a lot. Keep your soft heart closed for now.” My father rolled his eyes at me, and indicated me to keep quiet by putting his index finger on his lips.

“Grace, would you tell the truth to the police and help us get Clara admit her wrongdoing?” My mother nodded in agreement. At least, she was going to do something right now.

And then, she walked closer to me and ran her hand over my hair, while mumbling, “I know you have lost your trust on me, but I will bring it back. I promise that, and I believe you will forgive me very soon.” I turned my face away from her, as I didn’t feel like talking to her at the moment. What if she was trying to trap my father and me in some new game?

Just then, Drake came back with a small plastic bag of medicines. When our eyes met, he gave me his billion dollar smile, and when he noticed my mother sitting beside me with puffy eyes. His smile disappeared, and his mouth formed into a straight line. He seemed to be confused.

Drake looked at me quizzically. I directly spoilt my face and shifted a furious glare at my father. Drake understood the whole thing immediately. He didn’t speak a word to her, but gave her a half nod as she looked up at him.

When my father became aware of Drake’s arrival, he stood up from his chair and cleared it, “Drake, this is Lydia’s mother. She will help us with the case by telling Antonio whatever truth she knows about Clara and team. So, you take care of Lydia, since we will be away for some time. It’s evening now, so we need to hurry. Antonio will leave the department by any time soon.”

“Sure sir.” He replied back.

My father continued, “How are the pets at the hospital Drake? Did you talk to the constructor?”

Drake gave him a nod and spoke, “The pets are ready to be taken home and the shelter will be done in two days. We have to keep our pets at Animal Peace until then.”

My mother interrupted them in between, while saying “Can I put some money for the shelter please? At least I can do this for Lydia. Oh, and by the way! I have recorded the conversation of Clara, Vivian and Ricky’s parents in my cell phone.”

“No ma’am. This is my birthday gift to Lydia.” Drake spoke immediately, with a smirk on his face and then, he looked at me mischievously from the corner of his eye.

“But Drake, we discussed about this before right? I will pay for the shelter.” My father responded quickly.

“No arguments sir, if you give her a car. I give the shelter. Full- stops. Remember, no giving stress to Lydia!” My father sighed out loudly, and waved his hand dismissively in the air. No one could ever win over Drake. I wonder why he didn’t choose to be a lawyer.

After my parents left, Drake sat near me and gave me my before bed time medicines. It was seven- thirty in the evening. I rested my head on Drake’s chest and closed my eyes, while listening to his heart beat which sounded better than any music.

“Umm, Drake? Thank you for everything. Tell me the truth. Are you some angel, since good people don't exist in this world.”

Drake kissed both of my eyes and whispered, “I think the same about you my love. Now, go to sleep. We have to go home early tomorrow and start working on the shelter.”

“Drake, I miss my pets. Are they all doing fine at Animal peace, including Marwa?” Drake nodded, and kept his head lightly on mines. We both got cozy, and it was so peaceful too.

“Lydia, I think you should forgive your mother. She came back for you, and it is your luck. Your father needs her too. Just look at me, I am an orphan, while having two sets of parents who are actually useless.” I sighed in frustration because I didn’t really want to talk about her.

“Lydia, just try it for your father, please?” Drake pleaded.

“Okay Drake, just because you are asking me to. I will do it.” I replied edgily.

After some minutes of silence between us, Drake’s got a call from my father. My father informed Drake about his meeting with Antonio. The recorded audio given by my mother was a great help to all of us, the conspiracy of Clara and Vivian was clearly heard in it. And, after finding the matching pair of the other earring, Clara will be held along with her bad companion, Vivian. Antonio will cross question the doctor at Blue Cross too.

I thought for a moment. Did Vivian do all this just because he lost his job at Blue Cross because of my father? Or did he truly love my mother? Why he had much grudge against my father?
