Lydia- The Pet Communicator
Chapter 3
The next week passed quickly. My body improved a lot—I tried eating by myself and also practiced sitting upright independently. My body was still in terrible pain, but I managed. I wanted to resume my normal life soon.
I kept asking my father how the accident had happened and who had brought me here to the hospital, since I was sure there would have been witnesses. Despite my eagerness, he never told me, always avoiding the questions I asked. I still wanted answers, though.
My last day at the hospital arrived soon, and I learned that I would be going home with a nurse who would watch over me for another month.
My father was packing my bag, and my mother had gone to clear all my hospital dues. I was really excited about going home.
“Lydia, there’s someone here to see you,” my father said, opening the door.
It was my best friend, Clara. She walked in with a big grin on her face, and then looked over me from head to toe; a tear rolled down her cheek, and she wiped it away with her index finger before sitting next to me on the bed.
“I missed you so much! Glad to see you recovered,” she said as she wiped away another tear.
“Why didn’t you come earlier? I’ve been awake all week,” I said, raising an eyebrow at her.
She became tightlipped, and her eyes grew all watery. I repeated the same question irritably, and she finally said, “I couldn’t face you, okay? I saw the whole terrible scene right from the start. I watched you run out to save the puppy, and then that truck came barreling in at full speed. Several times, I shouted at the driver to slow down, but he had his headset on. He only stopped when he felt a bump underneath his truck, and by then, it was already too late. When he got out of the truck, I noticed that he was super drunk—his eyes were red, and there was a bad odor coming out of his mouth. The police arrested him. I couldn’t save you. I’m sorry.” She started sobbing out loud.
“Calm down. Did you bring me here?” I asked quickly.
She nodded, still crying.
I pulled her into a tight hug and told her, “So you saved me. I’m alive, see?”
“No, look at your condition! You can’t even walk, and it’s all my fault because I called you from behind and made your eyes land on that puppy in the road.”
“It wasn’t your fault. It was my own bad luck!” I growled.
“Girls, girls, please calm down,” my dad interrupted us. “Today is a happy day, remember? Lydia is coming home with us, so just relax, and we’ll all thank God she’s safe and sound.”
Clara’s sobbing slowed, and I patted her on the back to assure her everything was fine.
My father continued: “I know you’ve been asking questions about your accident, how it all happened and stuff. I was just waiting for the day Clara made up her mind to come and tell you the whole story herself.”
Soon the doctor came in and flashed me a grin. “So, my strong patient, you’re leaving today, huh?” I nodded back with a smile. “Make sure you take all your medicine on time along with proper nutritional food, no junk food at all. I am sending Ms. Britney Patterson with you, and she’ll be the one to take care of you for a month. I will be visiting you often too”
I thanked the doctor for taking care of me as best he could. It was through all the staff’s efforts that I’d recovered so quickly.
My parents were busy talking with the doctor, so Clara and I started gossiping. Clara started telling me how she’d broken up with her boyfriend and found a new one. I was glad that Ricky was always mine and would be forever.
“Okay, girls, time to move,” my dad said excitedly.
My mom helped me dress in regular clothes, and Dad carried all our stuff to the car. I was extremely excited about going home, and I wanted to know what I’d missed and what had changed over the past six months.
I sat down in the wheelchair with the help of my mother, and she pushed it all the way to our parked car. When my eyes fell on the driver’s seat, I saw that Ricky was there, looking at me with a huge grin on his face.
My father helped me sit in front, just adjacent to Ricky. “You guys get going, and we’ll follow you in my car, okay?” my dad said, then winked at Ricky. Ricky gave my dad a slight nod in return and started his car.
Ricky started driving in a different direction from my house, and I noticed we weren’t on the right street. I quickly asked him, “Ricky, did my dad buy a new house, or have I just forgotten the roads?”
He didn’t reply, just gave me a half-smirk.
“Ricky? I’m asking you something!”
He started to hum a song and avoided my question. I turned back to see if my dad’s car was behind us and noted that they were indeed following us.
“Fine!” I exclaimed.
After a while, Ricky stopped his car in front of someone’s house. He looked deep into my eyes and began to come closer and closer to me, so close I could feel his breath on my face. My nervousness made me feel dizzy.
“Ricky? Wha…” Just as I was about to ask him a question, he crushed his lips against mine.
We kissed for a long time. It felt so good—he tasted so sweet, and his lips were baby soft. I grabbed his hair to pull him closer, and we just kept kissing each other harder.
When Ricky finally pulled away, we were both breathing quickly. The kiss had been long and breathtaking.
“Let’s go inside, sweetheart,” he suggested.
I was about to ask another question, but he pressed his lips against mine, and we started kissing again.
“If you don’t stop asking, I’ll keep doing this,” he whispered. “Now follow me.” I simply nodded and licked my lips, which felt swollen after I’d kissed him so hard.
Ricky helped me out of the car, then opened the back car door and retrieved my wheelchair. I sat in it, and he rolled me inside the house.
It was completely dark when we entered. Ricky switched on the lights, and I discovered there was a surprise waiting for me.
A welcome back party!
