Lydia- The Pet Communicator
Chapter 20
Lydia’s P.O.V
** My life is totally screwed up. I already have so much running on mind and Drake reminded me of my exams. I only have one month left! What will I do? My father would be too hurt to know that I am leaving my studies as he is out of work..
I believe he has saved some money for us, after all he was a C.E.O of one of the largest company of travel and tourism but still, for how long could he pay for everything? He has to spend on the household, for my studies and the animal shelter. The funds we recieve from the Blue Cross are not sufficient. I don't even want my father to look for a job, given that he needs a break for two –three months. He is undergoing too much stress.
It's really nice of Drake to support me, and offer me some help financially. Nevertheless, he has a long way to go in his life. How can he put his money on someone he barely knows?
People say, “Life is not easy. We all have problems, even tragedies to deal with, and luck has nothing to do with it. Bad luck is only the superstitious excuse for those who don't have the wit to deal with the problems of life. ” But, I am tired of fighting my problems now. I just wish the ‘problems’ get tired coming to me and offer some space for happiness in my life. My inner ego feels like out crying, “Come on problems! Come more! I am all ready to fight you, because I am so used to with all the wretched things in life.”
Moreover, I have not heard from my mother for long. I was expecting her to come back, but it looks like she has moved on in her life and is very happy. I wanted to prove her and Ricky that I can really understand the animals and I will be a top veterinarian some day, but I guess this would also be a part of my dream.
Hmm, the question is, am I really planning to give up? No! I will fight. I will take this is as a task of my challenging life. I will prove each and everyone that I am gifted, with the help of my father and Drake.
I will earn a lot and repay my father soon. He won’t even have the need to do any job. I will work hard and make him proud of me. I believe I can do it. I am a brave daughter of a brave father.**
I brought out my phone from the purse, and texted Drake on the spur of the moment. I wasn't even sure if he was going to reply back, since I had disappointed him a lot.
“Drake, can you come to pick me up please? I miss Lucky and I am sorry for acting strange :( ”
1 New Message. It reads:
“Open your main door love, I am outside.”
I marched quickly to open the front door. Drake was standing there, grinning a fool. I doubted that there was something fishy, so I asked, “Is everything okay with you dear? Why are you so happy- unnecessarily?”
Drake pouted, and responded right away, “Please don’t be mad at me, I know you will be disappointed with me but then, you will love me more.” I looked at him blankly, while brushing my jumbled hair. Drake beamed excitedly, “I paid for your board exam admissions already! We have one more month to prepare and work hard.”
I threw the comb which I had in my hand at Drake angrily and walked out the house, slamming the front door in his face. Drake followed behind me and begged, “Don’t leave me like this. Let’s go to the Blue cross in my car, please? You should be happy.”
‘Happy for what? I'm able to afford my fees Drake. I can’t be happy for such a thing! It’s embarrassing and so cheap. What would I explain to my father? That he can’t pay my fees, so you paid for them?”
Drake lowered his gaze in distress and spoke, “It was a small gift from me Lydia. I had no such intentions.”
"Ask yourself, would my father appreciate this?" I then walked snappily to where he had parked his car and sat in angrily. Drake stood by the car’s window with an apologetic look on his face. I gave him a gesture to stop. Drake sighed heavily and sat on the driver’s seat. As he drove, we kept on exchanging stares, but we didn't talk all the way.
Drake cleared his throat when we reached the Blue Cross. He got out of the car and opened the door for me thoughtfully. I looked up at him and asked him to lean closer to me. He raised an eyebrow in awe, and bent forward. I held him around his neck and kissed him on his soft lips. He was so irresistible and adorable. Drake always made me feel special. He only wanted me to be happy.
“Thank you for everything Drake, but I don’t want you to suffer because of me. I am born with a bad luck.”
“You are a good luck to me and I won’t suffer if you forgive me for paying the fees. Did you?” I nodded in conformity and Drake jumped gaily in gratification. Above and beyond, we entered the animal hospital with positivity, expecting a good response from the doctors for Lucky. We wanted to take him home soon.
When we went into the room, I caught my father fast asleep. We didn’t wake him up, since he seemed weary. Drake sat on the chair next to my him and gave me an indication to check on Lucky. I gave him a half nod, while chewing my bottom lip nervously and walked towards Lucky. I ran a hand smoothly over his face to observe if he responds to my touch. Lucky tried to open his eyes, but it seemed difficult for him. Lucky growled in pain, “Lydia, my stomach hurts. I can’t breathe. I don’t think they are giving me the right treatment. These lots of injections are not helping me at all.”
Only then, a nurse walked in with an injection in her hand. I asked her, “How many times will you inject him? He is not recovering at all!”
“How did you know about the injections? No medicines are working on him. There is something else with the congestive heart failure. We also need to do some tests urgently.” The nurse responded edgily.
“His stomach hurts, and he has got difficulty in breathing too!” I exclaimed.
“It might be, since he has been suffering from diarrhea. We have already informed your father about it.” The nurse replied, while pointing to my father, who was drooling in his sleep.
Drake walked towards me and held me by my shoulder to comfort me, “He will be fine, sweetheart. Lucky is a strong dog.”
“I hope he recovers soon Drake.” I mumbled, and rested my head on his shoulder. All of a sudden, I felt a tap on my shoulder. When I turned around, I saw my father glaring at me furiously with his hands over his chest. I didn’t exactly know why, so I asked with a smile. “Did I do anything wrong?”
“You both are in a relationship right?” He asked irritably.
When I was about to tell him the truth, a male veterinarian hurried into the room with a nurse escorting him, and took Lucky for some tests. The nurse requested us, “Please wait here, we need to do some test and it would take us some time.” All of us nodded accordingly.
