Annabeth woke in darkness.

She felt a fear unlike anything she had ever known. She looked around and let her eyes slowly adjust.

The first thing she saw was the concerned blue eyes and freckles of a boy in her face, looking concerned.

She jumped back, startled at the proximity. The boy, on the other hand, seemed pleased.

"I knew that you would wake up soon!" He said in a cheerful voice.

Annabeth looked at him warily before glancing around more. She was in a cell, that's for sure. But the ground rocking beneath her told her that she was on a ship.

"Where are we? And who are you?" Annabeth asked.

The boy said, "I'm Will." And then Will smiled sadly at her. "We're on the Princess Andromeda. Luke Castellan's pirate ship."

Annabeth tried to sit up, but immediately felt woozy.

Will leaned over her, concerned. "You shouldn't move to much, that head injury probably gave you a concussion."

Annabeth didn't listen to him. "Luke Castellan? Isn't he known for ransoming and...," Annabeth paused, but Will finished her sentence.

"Enslaving his prisoners?" Will's smile dimmed considerably. "Yeah."

Annabeth, ignoring the pain in her head, stood up. "Well then we have to find a way out of here."

Will stood up with her. "No one gets out of here. But don't worry about it."

Annabeth turned on him. "What do you mean, 'don't worry about it? We're stuck on a pirate ship that's probably going to give me over to the Trishula the first chance he gets!"

Will looked queasy at being yelled at. "There's someone coming to rescue me. You're going to tag along. Okay?"

Annabeth stared at him suspiciously. "Why would you do that? You haven't even known me for half an hour."

Will shrugged. "I have a knack for helping people in need. I am a doctor." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Sort of."

Annabeth took a mental note of this fact and asked him the first thing that came to mind. "Who is it?"

Will avoided eye contact. "Who is who?"

Annabeth stared at him. "Who's coming to rescue us? Is the person really so bad that you think you can't tell me?"

The blonde boy backed away. "No, it's just that the person might not be deemed trustworthy to someone like you."

"Someone like me?" Annabeth asked coolly.

Will backed away again. "Not that that's a bad thing! It's just you're the princess of Athens! You don't understand."

Annabeth took three steps towards Will. "Then help me understand. Who's coming?"

Will looked at her and said with no hesitation, "Captain Percy Jackson."

Annabeth took a step back, seeming winded all of a sudden. "Percy Jackson?" She said. "The feared pirate of the seas? No. No way."

Will sighed. "I told you you wouldn't think he was trustworthy."

Annabeth huffed in frustration. He was right of course. Annabeth didn't go hanging around with pirates, but it made her mad that he had her so easily figured out.

"How do you know that he's coming for you? And how do you know him?"

Will smiled. "I know him because I'm part of his crew. And he's very loyal. He won't just leave me here on his sworn enemy's ship."

Annabeth was about to retort when they heard footsteps coming towards them. A pirate appeared soon enough, with black hair and an eyepatch. The princess watched him quietly as he approached her.

"Hello there, Princess," he said with a smirk.

"Who are you?" Annabeth fired back, not liking the look on his face.

"Ethan Nakamura, at your service."

Annabeth said nothing, just stared at him. She wondered what he was doing down here. Come to annoy them, or retrieve one of them. There were other options, of course, but none of them made sense.

"The captain wants you." Ethan said, and began unlocking their cell door. Before he had it opened all the way, he looked at Will. "Stand back against the wall facing away from us with your hands behind your back. Don't move until I relock the door."

Will nodded and did what he was told. Annabeth didn't move.

Ethan reached in the cell and grabbed Annabeth's forearm. He pulled her out and relocked the door. He had started to drag the princess away when she looked back one more time and saw Will's worried expression.

                                                                                 ***

Annabeth, on her way to the captain's cabin, started to memorize the ship's  layout. It was a standard ship, and the crew looked barely older than herself.

They reached the cabin and Ethan hauled her in. The stood waiting in silence for a minute before she heard a voice.

"Welcome, your majesty. I hope you're being treated well."

The man who had spoke was not what Annabeth expected. He was surprisingly young and handsome with his blond, short hair and blue eyes. He did have a scar on one side of his face that marred his beauty, but Annabeth supposed that was what happened when you were a pirate.

"As well as can be when you're in a cell. No food or water, but excellent good people to talk to." Annabeth retored.

Luke raised his eyebrows at her. "You have quite a sharp tongue for a princess."

Annabeth didn't speak, just crossed her now free arms over her chest.

"I just wanted to let you know," Luke continued, "That you have been ransomed for. The kingdom of Trishula is going to pay quite  a bit of money for the daughter of their enemy kingdom."

Annabeth felt herself go pale.

She stumbled backward leaning against the wall for support. "No." She said in shock. "No. You're wrong."

"Well your majesty," the captain said, "I'm seldom wrong." He looked at Ethan, who was grinning in the corner. "Take her back to her cell."

Ethan nodded and took hold of her again. He led her back to her cell and set her down on the floor. He laughed to himself as he left the room.

Will looked at her with concern. "What is it? What happened?"

Annabeth averted her eyes and said,  "The Trishula paid the ransom. I'm not going home."

Will glanced at her. "I'm so sorry. I don't know when Percy's coming, or I would reassure you."

"Better terrible truths then kind lies." (Anyone know the reference??)

Will nodded solemnly beside her. "If it helps, I heard that they're going to stop at the next port and celebrate their accomplishment."

"How would that help me?" Annabeth asked.

"We could try to escape." Will grinned.

Annabeth shook her head clear. "You're right. We have one more chance."

They started making their plan.
