Princess Annabeth Chase was so bored.

She had been waiting for her mother, Queen Athena, in the royal gardens for hours now, and her mother had told her she would be there in a matter of minutes! Annabeth sighed and hit her head against a tree repeatedly in boredom.

She wish she brought a book.

"Your Highness," Annabeth turned around and saw a palace guard walking up to her.

"Hello," Annabeth replied politely.

"Queen Athena apologizes for the long wait, but she'll be here any minute." The guard inclined his head in a small bow and left without another word, or a chance for Annabeth to respond.

"Okay then." Annabeth muttered to herself, the guard being too far out of reach to hear her now. Annabeth waiting a couple more minutes before her mother appeared.

"Sorry, Annabeth dear. The royal administrator caught me and apparently I was needed in a meeting right then."

Annabeth raised an eyebrow. Her mother never, and I mean never, called her 'dear'. "It's fine, the time passed quickly," Annabeth lied.

Her mother smoothed down her dress and sighed. "Annabeth, I know that you haven't much thought about this topic, but you need to think of suitors."

Annabeth stared blankly at her mother, understanding the words but not the implications. She refused to believe this conversation was actually happening.

"What are you talking about, mother? My 18th birthday isn't for another 2 months!" Annabeth exclaimed nervously. "There's no need for me to be thinking about that right now. Not with the war and all that we have to do. No one will care if I wait anoth-"

"Annabeth," her mother cut in coldly, "you will do this. And you will have a suitor picked out by the end of the month. If you don't, I will choose for you."

And with that promise, her mother walked off, not sparing Annabeth another glance. Annabeth, fuming, stalked quietly toward the training room and grabbed a knife off the shelf.

No one knew her skill with weaponry, she had gone a great deal of trouble to make sure that no one would find out. She knew her mother would put a stop to it before Annabeth could say the word 'cut'.

As Annabeth let her anger out on the dummies in the room, she thought about how unfair her situation was.

Why should she have to pick out a husband that won't care about her kingdom? Why couldn't she find love on her own? And in her own time?

With one final swing, Annabeth decapitated the dummy and she walked away. She went to the stables, where she knew a mare would be saddled and ready for her to go. She also knew that she wouldn't be coming back for a few days.

Let mother worry about me. She thought. Maybe it'll scare her enough to realize the risk of losing me, and she'll actually feel like I can do what I want for a while.

She made it to the stables and the boy working there handed her a white mare. She got on immediately, thanking the boy, and then she rode away from her mother and the decision of her marriage.

She made it to the docks. She always felt peaceful around the ocean. Even during storms and rain and hail, she would always come here to find peace.

She wished she could find peace like that in someone. She needed a good, trusting friend to help her get through her terrible situation.

Annabeth just let herself breathe, letting go the worry of the war, her marriage, and any other small problems that she had to deal with.

It was when she was so relaxed that she felt a sharp pain in her head.

The last thing she remembered was a looming figure picking her up and carrying her onto a boat.
