The beeping and humming of medical equipment were the only means of an alarm to wake you. You had no way of knowing how long you'd been asleep, and the daylight seeping through the window nearby was fading fast. The pain had been dulled down to almost nothing, save for an occasional tug in your chest, beneath where your ribs came together.

This is my fault.

Soft footsteps and even softer murmurs came in waves just beyond the curtains. After the lieutenant had been escorted out, your nurse had returned to make sure you were handling things okay. Hank's questions had been simple, but you knew he'd soon figure out you'd been lying... if he hadn't already known.

Why the hell did I lie? What point is there in changing details? Why cover up the truth and stall the inevitable? They just want to help, that's their job...

You took a long, deep breath, exhaling slowly. You knew why you had lied, and it was going to be a hard habit to break.

I shouldn't be covering for him. This is my own doing but I can't protect him.

The curtain being flung open made little noise but it snapped you out of your thoughts. Your nurse looked disappointed as she stepped closer. "Honey, I'm sorry to bother you, but you've got someone asking to talk. It's that android from earlier."

Connor. But... "Is the lieutenant with him?"

"No, I didn't see him. The boy's alone."

Your heart immediately started pounding in your chest. Hands clenching the sides of the hospital bed you sat up a little straighter. "If the lieutenant is there he has to be with him. I can't..." Swallowing the lump forming in your throat, you felt the nurse place a gentle hand on your own. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I know they need to question me, I..." Voice falling to a whisper, you added, "...... please don't say anything to them, but..."

Visibly worried she squeezed your hand. "Honey, if you don't want anyone to see you, you can make that decision. It's in your rights."

Protection- temporary though it may be- verses justice. "... tell him if the lieutenant is there, they both can come in. I just..."

You had to be certain. Chances were it really was the android who had left in a hurry, but you couldn't afford the risk of it being someone else.

Lips pressed thin, she nodded, squeezed your hand again, and walked away.

A few minutes passed in relative quiet before several sets of footsteps all came closer. Much to your relief, it did turn out to be the lieutenant and his partner. But your nurse was clearly still annoyed about earlier, as she prodded Hank several times in the chest with her finger. "She's got every right to tell you to get out, you hear me? I'm gonna be right outside that curtain, and if I hear anything that sounds like you're upsetting my patient again BOTH of you are gonna be escorted out by yours truly." She took a few steps back, grasping the curtain. "And you better believe that I ain't gonna be gentle about it." With that, the curtain was swiftly drawn shut.

"Jesus fuckin' Christ..." Hank muttered, rubbing his face and sinking into a chair nearby, one that wasn't right beside you. Then he turned his gaze on you. "Why'd you ask me to be here? I sent Connor cause I figured you wouldn't wanna talk to me again."

"It's the nurse that got irritated," you explained quietly. "Not me. And..." You glanced up at the android, meeting his gaze and finding a peculiar wave of relief: his eyes were warm. "I'm sorry. I had to make sure. All she said was that there was an android from earlier."

"So I'm guessing the android that attacked you looks similar to a prototype?" the lieutenant asked, his arms crossing as he sat back in the chair.

"There are several models that do have similar features," Connor chimed in. "While I may be a unique prototype, we also have the capability to alter a small handful of features, purely for aesthetic reasons. Namely hair color." He turned back to you, completely unaware that he had saved you from a question.

Wait. No. I'm doing it again. Why am I trying to protect him after what he did?

You just nodded, hand laid over your chest in a feeble effort to slow your racing heart. "...... I apologize. For earlier."

"Lying to me, you mean?" Hank asked, looking at you dead in the eyes.

Nodding, you tore your gaze away, towards your hands in your lap. "Some habits are hard to break, even years later."

"So lying is a habit of yours?"

"Not exactly. I hate having to lie, but I had been under an NDA for so long, it's ingrained into me."

He straightened up, arms unfolding. Now they were getting some answers, real ones. Nearby, Connor shifted and turned towards you. "So you had signed a non-disclosure agreement for your employment at CyberLife."

Letting that sink in, you turned your gaze up towards his. "I see you've been in my basement, then."

"And that also explains why you already knew my name despite no media productions having that information."

"Something like that." When the lieutenant made a frustrated motion you frowned, defensive. "What? Everyone in CyberLife was aware of the RK800 model, he was our pride and joy! I didn't personally work with him, but we as a company were doing something huge! Of course every employee knew his name!"

As you exclaimed, Connor's head was filled with static for one long moment. Filled with unease again, he looked away from where you were laid, the words echoing silently.

[Our pride and joy]

In the beginning he wouldn't have taken the remark into consideration. Turning to deviancy and allowing emotions to filter in had plenty of curious effects. He was uneasy, yes, but--

[No. Unease isn't the correct term. I...]

Laying a hand on your shoulder, you fell quiet and turned to him, to find Connor smiling. "Thank you. I am flattered to be seen in high regard, even now."

All Hank could do was raise an eyebrow.
