"HAAAANK!!!"

The human in question froze, in the middle of trying to make coffee for himself, because goddamn did he need it. But the too-well-known voice calling for him made Hank sigh heavily. Once he turned to the open entry to the waiting area, sure enough, Connor was there. "Connor, I fuckin' told you to take the week--... did you just run all the way here?" The android nodded, and he sighed again. "I'd say you should've used a taxi, but I know you were probably halfway here before that popped into your head." Shaking his head, he turned back to the coffee machine. "So what's the emergency? You're not here to work cause I'll toss you out the window."

"I need your help."

There was a vague, amused snorting sound from nearby, but Hank ignored it. "Help, right. About what?" When he got no answer, the lieutenant glanced at a visibly nervous android. "... I take it you got that phone call like you said?" Connor nodded. "Okay... did it not go like you expected...?"

"I have a date, Hank."

Whoever was within earshot stopped completely to look at the poor detective. Even Hank seemed to be frozen in time, staring with everyone else. But he snapped out of it quickly, chuckling to himself. "Well, good for you. You move pretty fast, but--"

"Whoa whoa whoa. Am I hearing things? Scrap heap over here has a date?" From nearby, Gavin obviously wasn't about to keep his mouth shut. Connor may have gotten properly hired as a detective, but that didn't mean he wasn't accepted by everyone. Detective Reed only seemed to dislike him even more. There was a rather cruel grin on his face as he eyed the android in front of him. "Date, huh? With what? Does it have a pulse?"

"Reed, cut your shit," Hank replied tiredly.

Connor had... other plans. For the most part, all of the nasty comments rolled off his back; why would an android be offended? But the mixture of having someone else- you- involved, and whatever he was doing to allow emotions filter in... he spoke before it could be stopped. "Detective, you of all people should know if your mother has a pulse."

A loud sputtering sound sprayed the coffee out of Hank's mouth, and he coughed violently while trying not to laugh.

Reed was... less amused. He saw red, getting far too close to the android, intending to beat the thing down but stopping at the last minute. "You think you're fucking funny, huh? All of a sudden you decide to try and grow some balls, start insulting me?"

Mindfully putting his hands behind his back, Connor wasn't budging. Bodyguard Mode hadn't gone away, it seemed. "You insult and degrade me on a daily basis, Detective. I don't bat an eye. But when I do it myself, you lose your cool." His crooked smile spread. "How does that phrase go...? Ah." The android leaned close. "If you cannot take the heat, get out of the kitchen."

Face turning red in his frustration, Gavin took a step back, mouth opening to say who knew what, but all at once he stopped. And for good reason: the Captain stood a couple of feet behind Connor. "Everything good over here? Reed, you're not giving the kid more shit, right?"

"Absolutely not, Captain," Connor answered, turning partially with a kinder smile. "He was congratulating me on the case. Said he couldn't believe how I managed to take down a prototype like that without a scratch. I offered to train him on some things only androids are able to do, and it seems I embarrassed him. He is awfully red, isn't he?"

Jeff wasn't entirely sure he believed that, but Connor didn't really have any reason to stand up for a known bully. Plus there was no way to ignore how red Gavin's face was. "All right, well... I came over to say the same. You did a fantastic job, Connor; we're all proud of you. And Hank told me he insisted you take the week off."

"He needs it," the lieutenant added, finally able to speak without spraying coffee. "He hasn't taken any time for himself, so I made him. Kid's got a date, actually."

"All right, all right! Good for you, about damn time." He pointed at Connor, but his voice was kind. "Long as you're a gentleman, you'll be just fine. Just be careful."

"I will, Captain. Thank you." The android watched him walk away before slowly turning back to Gavin, who didn't look well at all. "Is there anything else you'd like to say, or are you going to leave me alone?"

Jaw clenched, Gavin was angrier than ever. Having someone who never got offended was one thing, but since when did Connor start talking back? Letting himself stew in his anger would go nowhere, so his expression relaxed. If whoever the mystery date was would provoke the android, he could use that. Get the glorified microwave tossed out. "I'm just curious," he finally said, "what's the handicap? If you actually have a real date, what's the catch?"

The smug air around him didn't seem to vanish, but it did fade a bit. "Handicap?"

"Yeah. What's wrong with it? You can't tell me that a sane and conscious being said yes to you. So what, are they blind, maybe? Stupid as fuck? Something hideous because you can't do better? Maybe you're catfishing? The world needs to know."

Sensing a fight, Hank answered before Connor could. "None, actually. She's the one from the case we just closed." He drank the coffee, eyeing Reed meaningfully. "Lovely girl, smart as shit. Worked for CyberLife but left cause she sided with the deviants. Connor was her bodyguard but those two are fuckin' magnets. Which is perfect, since she can do shit for androids I'd never heard of."

"She has several prosthetics," Connor added, glancing at Hank with a smile. "Both are android limbs, but work as well as her own. Being intelligent and creative has its advantages, Detective. If she can build a perfectly operational mechanical limb, anything is possible." The smile twisted, and the idea of a fight got much closer. "I can put in a good word for you, perhaps she can build you a better repertoire of jokes. You seem... depleted."
