His patience was waning, though to be honest he was enjoying how things turned out. "Next question, then, so we... avoid more complications," Connor spoke, his tone slow and deceptively lazy. "Did you have the intention of taking advantage of her?" Another loaded question. "I recommend you choose your words carefully. That is, if your meager  vocabulary can manage."

It was just pot shot after pot shot. The android was taking every chance he could to belittle Reed. The monitors attached to his hands would give him away if he lied, especially since they were feeding the information directly to Connor. "She fucking tased me, it doesn't matter."

"That's not what I need to hear. When I ask you something, you answer. Dancing around the subject only makes it worse." Leaning forward again, there was an air of danger, hanging heavy in the room. "Were you going to take advantage of her?"

If Gavin lied, it would expose him. But he'd reached the point of no longer wanting to cooperate. Sitting back in the chair, he tried to act unbothered, despite the damage already done. "If you ask her, I'm sure she'll tell you. Between you and me, scrap heap, it doesn't matter what your little partner looks like. If she's that fucking stupid to be seen with you, it'd be a waste of my time trying to stick my dick in it."

If he expected the android to somehow leap across the table, or flip it over, Reed was sorely disappointed. Connor sat back again, not revealing the lie detector results. He merely gazed at the other male, almost... bored. "You're entitled to your opinion. You aren't interested, even in a vindictive manner, and I can respect that." Surprisingly he got to his feet, casually approaching to remove the monitors. "I will give the results to the Captain, and in the meantime I will do my research to find any patterns."

"... that's it? Two fucking questions? They weren't even useful, you goddamn--"

The speed at which Reed's head was violently shoved forward onto the table stalled the pain for a few seconds. The agony that was the remainder of his nose throbbed in white-hot waves, and he couldn't stop the groaning sounds. As badly as he wanted to retaliate, his head was held in place. Blood began to dribble out again, pooling around his face.

Gripping the human's hair tightly, the android yanked his head back up, noting the blood running down with distaste. "Detective, you've really gotten sloppy. Insulting her to my face, in an isolated room? Maybe your beating wasn't enough to make you understand. Maybe physical pain won't keep you in line. So I need to seek other, more creative methods. Unfortunately..." Connor's wicked grin started to spread. "There's no one to support you. The entire precinct tolerates you at best. No family to go home to. Not even a partner. You can't seem to keep them. So I don't have much in the way of options to target, Reed."

"G.... hh... go... fuck yourself..."

Shaking his head, the android watched the blood staining the human's front. "You know, I think I've realized why you seemed worse than usual. And it's entirely because of her." He got close, tone softening. "Jealousy doesn't look good on you, Detective."

"Why... why the fuck would I be jealous...?"

"Because in all your life, you haven't kept a partner for more than a few months. And here I am, barely active for two years, in a happy relationship." Slowly standing upright, Gavin was forced to look up at the android. The smile he had to gaze at was far too devious. "Now the question is... who are you jealous of? Is it me, because I've found someone when you flounder to do the same?" Now he leaned close, the tone switching from threatening to complete discomfort. "Or, perhaps, you're jealous of her?" Connor went quiet, though no less dangerous. "Oh, Detective, I'm flattered. Truly. But lashing out at me won't help you move on."

The mix of discomfort, confusion, and unease at how fucking close the android had leaned in made Reed struggle a bit. "Why the fuck would I be fucking jealous of her?! Back the fuck off!!"

"The denial is immense. But now it's obvious: you're jealous that I'm happily taken. And looking back at your behavior, it all makes sense." He was just toying with Reed and enjoying every second. "Detective, I'm sorry, but if you'd just confessed sooner, we could have avoided this."

"Confessed what?!"

"Tsk tsk... I'm sorry. Your love is one-sided. Insulting and degrading me doesn't make me interested. You need to learn to accept how you feel, and then you can start to move on." Abruptly letting go, Reed was sat upright again... but his head was turned to face Connor. "Maybe in another timeline you'd win me over. But my algorithms don't give the results you want."

Jerking out of his grip, Reed sputtered, trying to find the right insults to properly represent his loathing. "You... ffff... I... FUCK YOU!! I'M NOT FUCKING "INTERESTED" IN A LOAD OF SHIT LIKE YOU!"

Obviously he wasn't. But Reed had found the button that made Connor react, and now the opposite was true. He laid a hand on the human's shoulder. "Don't worry. I'll let the Captain know it was a misunderstanding. There's no mental illness, no possible breakdown. Just one very confused man, frustrated with his feelings to the point that he reacts violently to the one he wants. Your secret is safe with me, Reed." With that awful twisted grin, Connor left the room, leaving a furious detective alone to stew in his anger.

"DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE TRY TELLING PEOPLE THAT BULLSHIT!!" Gavin screeched, but the door had already closed.

The delicate flowers that had spread outside the pond had only multiplied. The grass was hardly seen beneath the scarlet blossoms. Trees in the vicinity had been drained of their life, vines crawling up the husks and giving almost tree-like shapes of their own.

Even the path, once relatively safe, was overrun with the vines. They crept along like snakes, but with those vicious thorns that didn't seem to break whatsoever.

The thorns had left no mark on his neck, but Connor would have to be mindful not to be anywhere near them. He'd made it away from the outer parts of the garden, crossing over to reach the island in the center of the pond.

Yet the pond itself had been tainted, as well. The virus did not develop vines to corrupt the waters; instead the water seemed to slowly be replaced by another, more sinister liquid.

Warm eyes narrowed, locating the boat nearby and headed towards it. But he realized that his curiosity would be his downfall, and took one of the oars instead. He dipped it into the pond, realizing that the surface layer was disguising the contents; as the oar broke through the surface, he had to give more of an effort to push through. And even when he tried to remove it, the pond seemed to refuse his efforts. It was like glue, but thicker, and upon finally pulling the oar out again, whatever was under the surface was black.

Unable to hide his disgust, the android went to set the oar aside, but hesitated. What clung to the wood began to burn through it like acid, and he had to drop the thing before it somehow touched his skin.

[It's closing in around me... I can't fight this off, it's gotten too far too quickly...

P-please... help me...]

His eyes closed, unaware of the tears rolling down again, begging internally to you, wanting only to feel serene again. He was trapped in his garden, watching it's beauty wilt and fester into something insidious. It was only a matter of time before it reached him.
