-Two months after recruiting Gwen-
"This was a terrible idea. We sent her to the universe her boyfriend is in, she won't be able to focus," Miguel grumbled next to you, as you sewed up a cut on his arm on his floating platform deep in the middle of the Society's building. He got this gash from another anomaly he went chasing after last night.
"Miguel O'Hara," you kicked his shin lightly. You would slap his arm, but your currently sewing it up. "would you have some faith in Gwen? I've been teaching her for two months straight, she knows what she's doing. She's got this. Now stop moving to look at your security camera feed, your making this hard."
He rolled his eyes while letting out a huff, but sat back in his chair as you stood at his side. "Don't you like- have a machine that can do this or-?"
"They aren't you," was all he said. You cocked an eyebrow, but didn't say anything else.
He suddenly let out a hiss, screwing his eyes shut and grabbing your thigh harshly. "Sorry! Sorry!" You apologized profusely, as Miguel let go of your leg.
"Just be a little more gentle, please-"
"Do you need me to hold your hand or-"
And Miguel O'Hara actually extended his free hand out towards you. He wasn't looking at you, just staring ahead. You froze. Is he- being serious? You thought.
You eyed him one last time, before grabbing his hand gently. You continued to stitch him up with your one hand, and Miguel would occasionally squeeze your hand letting out small grunts of pain.
"Okay, I need my other hand to tie it off, can I let go?" You asked gently.
He nodded and let your hand go. You tied off the stitch and he stood up. He examined the stitch and looked down at you.
"Thank you."
"Anytime."
You looked closer at his face. His eyes were bloodshot and he had bags under his eyes again.
He noticed you studying him and he leaned back, away from your analyzing stare. He put his hands up defensively."Listen, I know what your gonna say-"
"Miguel, I told you to let me take some of the late night jobs."
"I know but-"
"How late?"
"Not that late-"
"How. Late." You stated harshly.
He sighed defeatedly, his shoulders sagging. "I got into bed at 4am."
You glared at him. "And what time did you go to the gym. Don't lie to me Miguel, I know you wake up at the ass crack of dawn to go."
He mumbled something fast and incoherent.
"What?" You said leaning closer to him.
He coughed. "6 am."
"MIGUEL!"
"It's really not that bad."
You gaped at him. "Not that bad? Miguel that's two hours of sleep!"
"But-,"
"No. I'm doing the next couple late nights. Understand? And so help me, Miguel I will lock you in your room to ensure you don't go."
He sighed. "Yes ma'am."
"Good."
Your watch started flashing the word "GWEN". You leapt off Miguel's platform and onto the floor below for privacy. You and Gwen had become very close over the past couple months. She was kinda like a daughter to you. She learned fast, and you learned from her as well. She was hilarious and was a lot like you. You got along great. At one point you even dyed matching pink streaks in your hair. Hers was still there, very faintly, but yours had grown out fast.
"Hey what's up?" You questioned as you saw her little hologram float above the watch's surface.
"Um- nothing I called you on accident."
"Gwen-," you started.
"No! Really! I did! Got to go!"
And with that her little figure disappeared.
That definitely does not make you feel confident. Gwen was catching an anomaly by herself, which she had only done a couple times before, with all the other times being with you. You tapped your foot against the ground. I should call her back.
You typed in Gwen's name on your watch, waiting for her to pick up. Her tiny hologram reappeared. You looked back up at Miguel's platform. He seemed sidetracked, but you slunk further down the hall just in case.
"Gwen, your really concerning me-"
"I know I'm sorry I didn't mean-"
"You went and saw him. Didn't you?"
"Not really- from like- afar."
"How far is afar."
Her tiny hologram stretched out its arms and grown slowly brought them in closer until they were about a foot apart.
"Like...about...this far?" She said meekly.
"Gwen!" You scolded.
"I know! I'm sorry!"
"Do you at least have the anomaly?"
"Uh- I'm working on that part. He just stepped out, you know, went for a quick walk around the neighborhood."
"You lost him?" You said through gritted teeth. Miguel was going to be pissed, and on top of that, never forgive you for forcing him to let Gwen do this one alone.
"Listen I've got it covered-"
"Gwen. Listen to me. You have one hour okay? Miguel's expecting you back by then. I'll send the Spider in whatever dimension your anomaly went to for backup. Lila?" You looked up as her tiny figure appeared. "Where's the anomaly?"
"Earth- oh wait no- nope- oh there he goes again. He's a slippery guy. He's making his own portals."
Your mouth formed a line and your eyes widened as you faced Gwen's hologram, who was wincing.
"Do you know how bad this is!" You exclaimed.
"I know! I'm sorry okay?"
You sighed and clamped your eyes shut. "Like where is he now?"
"Earth-50101."
"Thanks Lila, I'll alert the local Spider to help her," you turned back to your watch as Lila fizzled out from the air. "That's all I can do Gwen."
"Thank you, thank you."
"Yeah, yeah. Now please don't mess it up."
"I won't."
And then the call ended. You quickly tracked the anomaly, and contacted Pavitr Prabhakar for backup. You took a deep breath and headed to your room to try to get your mind of the hour that was about to go by extremely slow.
———-
Apparently, you had fallen asleep during that hour, and woke up to your watch buzzing. Miguel's name was on the screen.
"Hello?" You answered, anxious since you hadn't heard from Gwen.
"Get down here. Right. Now." He gritted through the watch. Fuck. "On my way," you said quickly, as Miguel hung up.
This was very bad.
————-
Your hands were shaking as you stepped into the large room and swung up onto Miguel's platform. He was hunched over his desk and his shoulders were rising and falling rapidly. He was mad. Furious.
"What? What happened?" You asked, trying to hide your nervous tone.
Miguel turned to face you his eyes blazing. "They fucked up a canon event."
Your body turned to ice. Oh no, no, no. This was worse than any anomaly.
"Are you sure-"
"Oh," he crossed his arms and laughed darkly, "I'm sure." He pointed to one of his many screens surrounding his desk. You looked at him before peering at the screen. It showed a gaping hole in the middle of a city. Just like the hole in Miguel's daughters universe. You turned back to him with a frantic expression your arms out.
"B-but we can fix it right? We always do."
"Maybe. But this can't keep happening," Miguel shrugged.
"It was only Gwen's fourth solo mission-"
"It wasn't Gwen that did it," Miguel seethed.
You looked at him confused. "Then who-"
"It was the kid that jacked with King Pin's collider on Earth- 1610. Gwen's little boyfriend."
You continued to stare at him.
"It was Miles Morales."
