Signy's eyes fluttered open to the sound of hushed conversation just outside her bedroom door. Before she turned her attention to them, she realized that there was still an arm wrapped strongly around her midsection. She looked behind her and smiled slightly at the sight of Pietro's asleep figure, face nuzzled into the crook of her neck. She ignored the way her heartbeat picked up at the sight. In part, there was the feeling of happiness that she'd asked him to stay and that he'd listened. Additionally, though, anxiety sat in quiet anticipation, ruining any possible joy she could feel.
Deciding that there were more pressing matters than the blonde boy beside her, she turned her attention towards the door, registering that it was Vision and Wanda quietly conversing. Glancing at the window, she saw that the sun was low in the sky. She and Pietro must've slept the day away and now Wanda and the rest of the team had returned from Lagos.
She listened closely in order to pick up her friends' words. "It was not your fault, Wanda," Vision said quietly.
It was only then that Signy registered that the girl's shoulders were shaking slightly. She heard Wanda's sharp inhale as she said, "How can I tell them what I've done? How will they ever look at me the same?"
"They love you, Wanda. We love you," Vision assured, placing a hand on her shoulder. "No setback could ever stop us from loving you."
Setback? Signy wondered.
"I thought I was doing the right thing," Wanda sobbed, barely having registered Vision's words. "I should've held it longer. I should've moved further away. I-"
"Do not discredit yourself, Wanda. What is done is done. You can only look forward and know to do better next time. Mistakes happen in the line of duty-"
"A mistake?" Wanda repeated. "A setback... I killed almost thirty people."
Signy gasped quietly, but it was enough to draw the attention of both Wanda and Vision. Her hand moved to rest on the boy's arm which was still locked across her. "I didn't want to disturb him. Or you, for that matter... What happened?" she asked quietly.
Wanda quickly wiped the tears from her cheeks and walked slowly into the room, tucking one leg underneath her as she sat down on the edge of the bed. Signy was focused solely on Pietro as she carefully removed his arm and sat up. He stirred, but remained unconscious as the girls turned towards one another.
"It wasn't Barnes," Wanda began. "Sam discovered as much on the way there. It was Brock Rumlow. Some HYDRA agent who had a history with Steve... It all happened so fast once we arrived. There was a team of mercenaries and they were after a biological weapon. I was in pursuit with Sam and Nat. Once the vial was recovered, I went to find Steve." There was a heavy pause and a shaky sigh before she continued. "Rumlow would have blown the square with the amount of explosives strapped to his chest. I contained the explosion around him, lifted him away from Steve and the civilians." Wanda paused again. Signy could see the tremble of her lips and the sheen of tears brimming her eyes. "But I was too close to the building. And the force of the explosives was so strong. I couldn't hold it together any longer. I released it and the corner of the building imploded... Twenty-six people died."
