Alice adapted quickly to the new way of living in the Avengers facility. With just her and Signy around, it often felt like a party every day. She would wake up in the morning and find her way to the kitchen where she'd root through the cupboards to find something to make them for breakfast. Signy would roll out of bed, groggy and in need of coffee, though her energy would return as her mug drained.
Throughout the day, they would watch movies, go on walks around the outskirts of the compound, read books out on the grass, and visit Maria and other members of the compound's staff.
By nightfall, they'd order dinner in and cuddle up. It was more shared time and affection than Alice was used to. Since Sokovia, she'd been so solitary almost consistently, but even before that, she didn't spend much time with her family and social opportunities were sparse. She was often holed up in her room at home, enjoying her alone time. There were few people who she felt so comfortable around to actually want to spend all day every day with.
The two still maintained some free time separate from the other, of course. But Signy was confined to the Avengers facility for the foreseeable future, the monitor on her ankle a constant reminder. And Alice didn't exactly have anywhere to go.
Signy loved being around Alice, too, of course. She never had a younger companion like this. She'd always been the youngest: in her family, in the Avengers, even between her and the Maximoffs. It was a completely different dynamic with Alice.
It helped fill some of the gaps that were left by her friends' absence. Little time alone meant little time to think about just how alone the two actually were.
The nights became the hardest. When it felt like that ankle monitor was weighing her to her bed. When she realized that she couldn't just knock on the next door over and expect Pietro to answer. When she couldn't wander into the kitchen in the middle of the night to find Natasha making a meal at odd hours. When Steve wouldn't come sit with her until she was able to sleep soundly.
She missed them. But she wouldn't admit that to anyone. Especially Alice. She's just a kid, Signy often reminded herself. She shouldn't have to bear the burden of someone else's shit.
So she restricted those thoughts to her nights alone. And during the day, she entertained Alice in any way she knew how, showing her the magic of the Avengers facility, even without the people who made it Signy's real home.
Signy had mixed feelings for when certain others would visit. For example, when Maria was around, she was ecstatic. A true confidant for many years, Signy was able to fall right back into her old routine with Maria.
Tony, however, was another story. He had to spend a lot of time at the compound for obvious, business reasons. He seemed to be spending a lot more time there around the time Signy heard him quietly mention to Maria some Pepper-related problems.
Tony began to observe Alice and Signy's dynamic more frequently, and Signy did not enjoy it. She felt watched and judged. Tony already chased away Signy's closest peers. She didn't like imagining history repeating itself.
