Chapter Nine:

My snowboard swerved from under my feet, making me topple over onto the freezing cold snow, underneath of me. I took down at least, a snowboarder, a couple skiing, Tanner a couple of times (in his attempt to make me learn how to snowboard) and a person trying to walk back to the lodge. I’d say, I’m pretty good at ruing people’s days.

Bracing myself on one arm, I pushed my body off the ground and back to my original stance, glancing from side to side for upcoming “traffic.”

“You okay?” Tanner asked me, coming up from behind. He was sporting black skinny jeans (even though of the freezing temperatures), a heavy jacket that was dark grey and a snowboard strapped to his feet. He slid to a stop beside of me, and held me sturdy. I nodded to him, realising his grip on my fingers and edged my board a slight cementer to the front. Flinging me off of my once sturdy (kind of) balance and sending me through a time-altering turn of events. My arms slung out from my body, in a desperate move to keeping my balance and bent my knees trying to hold on a bit longer before falling to my death.

Having nothing to grip onto, I slowly edged my board back to the way it was when Tanner came from behind me. Slowing down my speed and starting to regain my visual sighting again. Soon I come to a complete stop in the middle of the snowboarding trail, thinking I did it! I finally learned how to stop a snowboard!

We went back to the cabin after Andrew and I slipped about four more times on the slopes. I guess my sudden burst of being able to accomplish something that had been scareing me to death for years, had been drained out of me. Maybe it was all those eyes on me when I went to go show Andrew, Holly and Tanner.

The car pulled back into the drive and we all sauntered over to the wooden door, waiting in the freezing cold for Holly to get her key out. She pushed the key in the hole and turned it to the left, stepping in and shaking our wet overcoats and boots off.  Then we really just separated from each other, Andrew and Holly heading into the den to watch TV, me shaking off my wet clothes and going outside for a swim and Tanner scurrying off to somewhere.

The water was heated (a new feature that the White’s decided to get installed). Then entire outside was lit up by lights, lawn chairs spread along the edges of the stone walkways, and the water a shimmery blue that you could see right through. I kicked my feet in it first and then dropped my whole body into the warm water.

I walked around a bit, swimming to the other side and then back, holding my breath underwater until I couldn’t anymore. Coming back up from under the water, I wiped my eyes, brought my hair back out of the water and noticing a figure outside of the pool’s edge. “Andrew?” I shouted, guessing it was him, after all he did know I would be here in the first place. The ‘subject’ didn’t say anything, jumping into the pool, splashing water on my face as it neared.

“Tanner?” I guessed knowing that he disappeared somewhere after skiing. The figure inched closer and closer to me, starting to show a few more details of its face. “Hey.” It spoke making me automatically knowing who it was. “Hey.” I say back to him. “How’s it going?” I ask, making a joking small-talk conversation happen. He chuckles, wiping his own eyes with his hand and then swam to the edge where I had propped my back against. “Nothing, just swimming around with you.” He tells me, like I don’t already know. “Really?” I say, punching his shoulder, which was still covered with his black shirt he was wearing earlier. “You really got in the pool still wearing your skiing clothes?” I ask him, pinching his wet t-shirt off his soaked shoulder. He pushed me back, jokingly of course and swan towards me, pushing me under the water.
