We went to the beach that day and she drove the car that we used. I don't know why, but something about Melissa's presence is making me feel alright.
"What's your favorite song?" I asked.
"Why do you care?"
"Well, I'm your..."
"Your what?"
At that time, I can't even say she was my date. I miss my Agathe, and she is my only date. Melissa's face lightened up and turned to look at me.
"You can't say it, can you?"
"Sorry. I'm-"
"I understand. I'm heartbroken too. I just broke up with my fiance a week ago. And then my uncle came to ask me to marry you. I'm so mad at him, but don't worry it isn't your fault."
I was stunned to hear this from her.
"My parents agreed with Uncle Dean, and said it was a great opportunity to make our money grow."
I listened to her angry yet calm rants on our way to the beach. And I haven't spoken since I wanted to hear more about this. Then she asked me:
"Can we not consider this as a date? We should call this friend's day out or something."
"Yeah, that's what I'm about to say."
"I have a question, Brahms."
"What's it?"
"What happened, why did you get your heart broken?"
I told her it was a long story, so I asked her if she could wait until we could sit in the fine sand and talk about each other's reason why we broke up with our particular person.
When we got to the Lakesbrough beach, we laid out some may sit on, we brought out the coffee I made earlier and talked about our past lovers whom we broke up with.
"My ex was the one who broke up with me. I didn't understand at first but when the truth came out, turns out he was in a relationship with another girl when he was also with me."
"He was a two-timer huh?"
Melissa nodded and asked me what happened.
"Well, do you know Agathe Evans?"
"Yes, she's pretty rich ain't she?"
"She was my girlfriend. Her father asked me to stay away from her for the reason that my father's business went bankrupt."
She looked at me and said:
"You shouldn't have broke up with her. The thing you needed to do was get away with her."
"I can't, family always comes first, I didn't want her to choose between me and her family. I love her. I want her to be happy."
Melissa just listened to my story just as I listened to hers. When lunchtime came we went to her house where I met her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Reed were welcoming me by their porch when I got there. For once, I felt accepted not because of the money left by my family, but because I am asking for permission to marry their daughter.
Their home wasn't that big, but they were rich, and they were happy. And I think that's the most important thing, being happy.
I saw Melissa's vinyl records. Most of it was 'The Beatles'. No wonder she dresses like Paul McCartney.
"You fancy 'The Beatles'?"
"No, I'm more of a 'Queen' fan."
"Oh really? Yeah, my brother too, he's way too obsessed with Freddie Mercury."
We sat down in the living room and talked and talked. I learned that she hates greasy foods yet still loves to eat a burger with a big chunk of meat in the middle. She loves her dog Susie whom she got when she was seven years old. She hates when her brother borrows her precious vinyl and doesn't return them to the right place.
There wasn't a 'cosmic' connection when I first saw her. But it gave me butterflies when I just sat down to talk to her.
In their home, I noticed that there wasn't a servant around. So, I figured to cook for them to make a good impression. Mrs Reed let me stay for dinner so I volunteered.
