I woke up with a pounding headache. My head was throbbing, and when I looked down, I realized I wasn't wearing any clothes. I tried to recall what happened last night. I remembered going to the pub, but everything after that was a blur.

I reached for a painkiller on the shelf and took it before dialing Serena's number.

"Rena, can you tell me what happened last night?" I asked her.

"What happened?" she responded, just as confused.

"That's what I'm asking. What happened at the pub?" I pressed.

"I don’t remember. Didn’t you drop me off last night?" she asked. I hung up the phone, frustrated.

Next, I called the other person who was with me last night.

"Susan, what happened last night?" I asked as soon as she picked up.

"You don’t remember?" she replied, again with a question.

"No," I admitted.

"You don’t remember your handsome boss taking you home?" she asked. My stomach twisted in knots. I really couldn’t remember.

"No, I don't," I said, horrified.

"Did anything happen?" she asked me.

"What do you mean by 'happened'?" I asked back.

"How would I know?" she replied. I hung up, feeling even more anxious.

Did something happen? I wondered.

Later at work, I sat at my desk, trying to focus. Sara asked me to send some files to my boss, but I refused. I wasn’t feeling well. When he called me to his office, I avoided him.

It was noon, and most of the staff had gone to the restaurant. I was on my way to the store when someone pulled me into the print room.

"What are you doing, Dominic?" I asked, rubbing my wrist where he had grabbed me.

"I should be asking you the same thing. What are you doing?" he demanded, his voice tinged with frustration.

"I'm doing my work," I replied, avoiding his gaze.

"Why are you avoiding me?" he asked, noticing my behavior.

"I'm not," I said, turning away from him.

"Yes, you are," he insisted, pulling me back to face him.

"Nothing, Dominic," I muttered, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Are you sure?" he asked again, his eyes searching mine.

"Yes," I confirmed.

"Okay," he said, releasing my hand. I moved to open the door.

"Dominic, did something happen last night?" The words slipped out before I could stop myself.

"Is that why you're avoiding me?" he asked, chuckling. His expression seemed more relaxed now.

"So, something did happen," I thought, trying to piece together the fragments of last night.

"You don’t remember anything?" he asked, curious.

"No," I admitted.

"What a shame! You don’t remember how you seduced me last night?" he teased. Seduce him? That seemed impossible.

"Did I?" I asked. Who knows what I did after getting drunk.

"You just relax and think. If you still can’t remember, then I’ll tell you," he whispered in my ear before leaving. I wanted to ask him more, but the staff started returning from lunch. I stayed at my desk, feeling unsettled.

"Cat, you’ve been staring at the door. Are you waiting for someone?" Henry asked, breaking my thoughts.

"No," I replied, quickly looking away.

"Are you looking for the boss?" he pressed, noticing where I had been staring.

"No," I insisted.

"Okay, if you say so. You know I can keep a secret," he said, miming a zipping motion across his lips.

I hesitated, then asked, "Henry, can I ask you something?"

"Of course," he said, setting his phone down.

"How is your brother with girls?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. His eyes widened in surprise.

"You know my character. My brother is the exact opposite," he said. "Dominic keeps his distance from girls."

"Does he have a girlfriend?" I asked, my heart racing for reasons I didn’t understand.

"Yes," Henry replied, and my chest tightened. But I had never seen Dominic with any woman.

"Who is she?" I asked, imagining someone extraordinary—maybe a supermodel or a CEO.

"I don’t know, Cat," he said, studying my expression.

"What are you thinking?" he asked.

"I haven’t seen any girls coming here," I said.

"That’s because his love is one-sided," Henry explained casually.

"One-sided?" I echoed.

"Yes. He’s been in love with a girl for years, but she doesn’t know it," he said. That sounded tragic.

"Hasn’t he confessed?" I asked.

"No, I’ve never seen my brother scared of anything—except this," he admitted. I almost laughed at the thought of Dominic being afraid of something. But who was the girl? And if he never confessed, how would she know?

"So, your brother is going to stay single for life?" I asked, trying to keep my tone light.

"No, there’s a chance now," Henry said, making my heart tighten again.

"What chance?" I asked, dreading the answer.

"She’s back now. I’m sure he’ll confess this time," he said. I felt a pang of jealousy, though I knew I shouldn’t.

"Yeah," I muttered, my mind spinning. Who was this girl? And why did she have to come back now? But if she was his true love, who was I to stand in the way?

"What do you think? Will she accept him?" Henry asked.

"Of course," I said, forcing a smile. "He’s been in love with her for years without expecting anything in return. I’m sure she’ll say yes." But inside, I was conflicted.

That night felt endless.

My heart raced uncontrollably. I tried to calm down, reminding myself that he was just my boss. But he had always been there for me, even when I hadn’t asked for his help. Why? Maybe he considered me a friend. I should be happy for him. He was finally getting the love he deserved. But I couldn’t shake the feeling of sadness.

No, I can’t be selfish. These are just casual feelings. He was there for me when no one else was, and that’s why I feel this way. I should congratulate him. He finally has a chance at love.

There will be someone for me too, someday. If not, I can stay single. That would be better.

It’s better to be single than to live in fear of being betrayed.
