Sam's POV
I continue to stare down at the room key, feeling my heart almost beat out of my chest. I look at the receptionist who was still smiling at us, little does she know that this situation is about to get very awkward.
"Ma'am, are there any other rooms available?" I ask while leaning over the counter, not even noticing that Colby was still staring at the key.
"I am sorry sir, but is the room not to your liking?" She asks me with concern going over her face.
"No, it is not that. It's just we would like to stay in separate rooms." I say trying not to make it sound suspicious or mean.
I glance back at Colby who now has his arms crossed and is looking down at the ground. I sigh and look back at the receptionist who is now typing on the computer to find available rooms.
"I am sorry sir, but it seems all our normal rooms are either booked or are undergoing renovations. I can set you up with a master suit, but it will be a little more expensive." She looks up at me and then glances over at Colby who is still looking at the ground, as if he was zoned out of reality. I sigh and look at Colby.
"No ma'am, that is okay. I think this room will work for the both of us." I say while still looking at Colby, he looks up at me surprised by my response.
"Are you sure?" Colby asks me with worry in his eyes. I give a slight smile and nod. This is my best friend; everything will be fine.
Colby continues to look at me and a soft smile grows on his face. We pick up our bags and start to head toward the elevator. We look back at the receptionist and wave goodbye, she does the same. We get to the elevator and press the button. I stare at the arrows on top of the elevator, Colby does the same. We hear the bell ding, and the door opens. Colby walks in first then I behind him. We turn around and Colby presses the button for the 3rd floor. We begin to go up, as we stand there in silence.
I look over in Colby's direction so that way I can look at him in my peripheral. He was leaning against the elevator wall looking at the ceiling with his head slightly up. I look directly at him and notice his neck. The curves that his Adam's apple makes and how slim yet distinct his neck is. I catch myself staring as I hear the ding from the elevator. Colby pushes off the wall and we wait to exit, but the doors don't open. I look at the screen above the elevator that says 3rd floor. We are here but the doors won't open.
"Of course, this happens with us in here." Colby jokes and leans against the wall again. I begin to click the open-door button, but nothing happens.
"Hey, calm down, remember we read about this. It says that the elevators will not open for a while or they will have problems." Colby says while grabbing his phone out of his pocket.
"Oh yeah, I completely forgot." I chuckle a little bit and look over at Colby who is now scrolling on his phone. The elevator doors open.
"Finally," I say and step out into the hallway.
"So which way?" I ask Colby looking both ways down the halls. Colby steps beside me.
"Right," he says while walking down the hall. I follow behind him while clutching the bags that were on my shoulders.
As we get closer to the door, I can feel my heart start to beat faster. I see it, I freeze in my tracks. I stare at the door as if something behind it is waiting for me. My breathing gets heavy, and my vision starts to go blurry.
"Are you ready?" Colby says while opening the door. I flinch at the sound of his voice causing me to escape my trance.
I nod quickly and put my head down and go in. Colby follows behind me. I stop in the middle of the room and look around it, studying where we will sleep tonight. I barely noticed that there was just one bed until I saw Colby put his bags down on the couch.
"What are you doing?" I ask, scared of what might come out of his mouth.
"I am going to sleep on the couch tonight. You did last night so I will tonight." He says while looking down and untying his shoes.
I nod and put my bags down on the bed, staring at the comforter wondering what to say.
"I am sorry for how I acted." I heard Colby silently whisper.
