Ray always had a weird memory. At least, that's what he says. His oldest memory was one of a dark place. After that, it was the face of a woman. His mother.
At least, that's what he says to everybody that asked about his weird memories. Because Ray knew it wasn't the oldest memory he had. Yes, it was the same but, instead of staying in his mother's arms, he was taken away from her before being put in a room with other babies. Women he didn't recognize and monsters.
Monsters that would keep him awake at night for so long. The first time he cried, when he was born, wasn't because of whatever reasons the doctor said, it was because of his mother. His mother that was alive and smiling genuinely. His mother that would be able to love him for real.
When the nurse had taken him away so Isabella could rest, the little boy had not stop crying. Despite the effort of the poor nurse, Ray had not stop crying. He had cried and cried until his voice and tears had ran out. He didn't want the unknown women to take him away from his mother again. He didn't want those monsters to look at him like he was their next meal.
Ray had ended up falling asleep out of exhaustion after crying without a noise. The next morning, the nurse taking him in her arms had woken him up. He started to cry once again as she brought him back to the room, trying to calm him down at the same time without any success. He had cried until he felt the warmth he had always been craving. The warmth of a mother. Of his mother
As he was falling back asleep, Ray felt a kiss on his head that wasn't his mother's. He had opened his eyes to see a man looking tenderly at him. Not having known any better, Ray would've thought that he was a complete stranger, but he quickly understood that it was his father. Leslie was his name. His father from who he had inherited the green in his eyes and the light freckles you could see on his cheeks, especially under the sun.
As he fell back asleep for good this time, Ray was happy.

For all of his five years of life, Ray always had nightmares. Nightmares that made him scared to go to sleep. He would see those monsters from his memories. The worst of them all was the one where his mother was lying dead in front of him. His mother and two other people, a boy and a girl, that he knew where important to him but didn't know who they were for some reasons. These nightmares were so real that he would wake up sweating and panting in panic.
He would wake up screaming sometimes, waking up his parents at the same time. Isabella and Leslie would rush to his side to comfort him.
If they weren't the ones to rush to his bedroom, Ray was to one to go join them. Sleeping beside both of his parents was appeasing him. The nightmares never, or rarely, comes back when he's with them. Especially when his mother sings to him that lullaby that appease him everytime.
One day as they were walking in the parc the three of them, Ray between his parents, something caught the boy's attention.
He turned around to see what it was and immediately froze, eyes widening in fear. There, right in front of him. It was one of those monsters from his nightmares! It was a hundred times bigger than him. His weird, deformed form with his sharp teeth and claws. It almost looked like a giant lizard that had been burnt alive and had survived.
