Chapter one – The Move
"How am I supposed to live a normal life when I'm constantly being shuffled across state line after state line?" That's the million dollar question I always ask myself when my parents nag at me for never having a life and always keeping an attitude. I am seventeen and unlike most seventeen year olds, I have never had a best friend nor a boyfriend. I don't find it surprising but according to my mother, she thinks I'm some anti social freak who scares everyone away with my bad attitude.
I just ignore them and plug my headphones in for the rest of the move, they don't seem to notice as they keep on talking about how this time I should try to reach out and make friends. Turning the volume all the way to block out their annoying voices hoping they catch on and give up.
"Sutton!" I glance up from my phone to see my father glaring at me through the rear view mirror.
"What?" His eyes narrow at me as I don't use my manners.
"It's sir, and turn that shit down. We can hear it all the way up here." I smile a smug smile and nod my head turning it down only a few notches.
The ride seemed to drag on and on as state after state blurred by. I don't usually ask where we are going but my gosh, this cramped space is starting to get on my nerves. Two more hours go by and we end up being welcomed to Tennessee.
"Um... Please tell me we're just passing through?" I finally speak up as I feel the car start coming to a slow speed as we merge to get off on the next exit.
"Nope, this is our new home!" My mom chimed excitedly.
"Fuck my life." I muttered under my breath. I already know that this move is going to be shit and no hopes of anything to change.
"Sutton, honey why don't you run the brush through your hair to look a little human." My mom said reaching back holding a hair brush in her hand, I just frowned but took the brush. I wasn't big on looking good for others but I wasn't big on looking like a homeless person either.
"When do I start school?" I asked as we passed by the local high school that I'm pretty sure held my demise.
"In two weeks. It gives us plenty time to settle in and even get a feel for the town." She said as she scoped out the shops and sights.
When we drove past what looked like a rundown mini mart, I couldn't help but to notice a bum hanging out by the door. The odd thing was there was a smile on his face like he was happy about life, I just shook my head and sat back in my seat for the rest of the drive which was not even five more minutes before we pulled up to a basic one story house that needed major TLC work.
"Alright Sutton, why don't you run in and tell the movers which room you prefer so they can get to work." I just nodded and gladly jumped out of the car, I could feel the blood rush back to my numb legs as I walked a little wobbly to the house. Just like the outside the inside was plain and defiantly in need of an interior designer. Ignoring the rest of the house I found the two spare bedrooms and chose the one farthest away from my parent's room. I peeked into the closet and noticed that the door had a full length mirror.
I stood their staring at my refection as the movers starting bringing in my things. My blood red hair was carelessly tossed into a pony tail, my dark brown eyes looked almost black against my pale skin. I had my right nostril pierced with a diamond. My mom had liked it and said it made me look older but my dad had been highly pissed about it. He always told me the stupid saying that 'if God wanted a third hole in my nose then he would have put one there.' All I could say to that was.
"Douche."
