Walking into the office after my mom dropped me off, my eyes scanned the floor, they were looking for a certain blonde headed guy with striking blue eyes. He hadn't responded to me all morning so I just assumed that he had been in a meeting or dealing with something important. "Morning, Sutton." My father said as I walked into the mail room, it was odd because he never came in here. He was sipping on his coffee, something was going on; I could feel it deep in my stomach but I said nothing. "Morning, Sir." He smiled while patting me on the back before walking out humming to himself, something was defiantly up.
"Yes, I need to cancel the birthday cake and balloons that are set up for Friday..." I heard my fathers assistant say as she was speaking to someone over the phone, I know Friday was Brendon's birthday but why were they canceling his party? "Sutton!" I heard my name being called from down the hall, turning to find Brad one of the accountants here walking towards me. "Yes, sir? What can I do for you?" He handed me a stack of papers with a smug smile that I wanted to slap off his face. "You need mail these by 5 sharp. Don't be late." He said before heading back to his desk, I hated this job! The only good part about it was the money I made and getting to see Brendon, speaking of him I made my way to his desk only to look around in confusion. All his stuff was gone, there was nothing left. I looked around at everyone who was focused on a computer screen, did no one else notice that Brendon's desk was cleared?
All day I had tried texting him and never once received a response, no one in the office had seen him all morning. The ride home with my dad was uncomfortable because all he did was try to have small talk and hum along to the music, all I wanted to do was hop in my car and drive over to his house. "Jade and I had plans tonight to go to the movies." I said jumping out of the truck he just gave me a thumbs up and headed into the house with me tailing behind him, he was defiantly in a chipper mood because he actually walked in and kissed my mom. "I'm going to Jade's now, be back at curfew." I said walking back out the door after grabbing my keys, I wasn't headed to Jade's though, I was headed to see Brendon. As I got into my car I noticed that my Lemony Snicket book was sitting in my passenger seat, which I would have sworn I left it at Brendon's house the last time I stayed the night.
Pulling up to his house I seen that strange car that was parked across the road that night parked in his driveway, dread set into my stomach. I knew that what ever was about to come wasn't going to be something I liked, swallowing down the vomit that wanted to come up, I knocked on the door. "Well, well, well.... Can I help you?" Her voice sent chills down my spin, Brooke stood at his door like she lived here. "What the hell are you doing here?" I asked, my voice filled with venom. "I live here?" She pretended to be confused then acted shocked with a fake gasp. "Brendon must have not told you yet.... Well... This is awkward." She looked around then back at me with a fake sad face, my throat seemed to forget how to function because I could not swallow the knot that had formed in it. "Told me what exactly?" I didn't want the answer, I don't know why I even asked. "Maybe I should let him tell you instead?" She started chewing her lower lip like she was nervous. "Just spit it out." I growled, I was tired of these games and I wasn't sure how much longer I can keep my tears at bay. "Brendon and I are back together." I just shook my head, I could feel the tears building up. "I don't believe you!" I said wiping the first tear, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone showing me a text from Brendon this morning asking her to meet up so they could talk. "The proof is right here, I know how hard it is to lose him..... All I'll say is ice cream helps ease the pain. Rocky road is my favorite." My heart was shattered as I seen his number and his text, he texted her but not me.
I ran for my car and sped off without looking back, how could I have let myself believe in his stupid lies. The tears were pouring from my eyes like rain falling from a cloud, I've never experienced this kind of pain before. I felt like someone had taken my heart and ripped it out stomping all over it, my breathing was getting shallow as my eyes were blurry making it hard to see the road. I wasn't sure where I was going or even what direction I was headed in but as soon as I heard a horn blaring directly in front of me and a car coming at me head on, I quickly slammed on breaks and snatched my car back into my lane and onto the side of the road where I let the sobs wracking my body take over. I sat there and cried for what seemed forever until I was just a hiccuping mess, looking around it was getting dark out. Laying my aching head back on the headrest my eyes fell on my book now laying open on the floorboard, leaning down I picked it up noticing a note with Brendon's handwriting on it. My heart was racing again, opening the note it was dated today.
