Sun creeps in through the shaded windows and I let out a groan as I try to dig deeper into my bed. I'm met with an unforgettable, pounding pain in my head. A discomfort in my stomach. Blurry eyes, the sniffles. Winter is going strong — the air is cold, and the ground is a soft slushy mush. The house feels colder than usual. Maybe its the fact that my parents aren't home, so there's less body heat, or that it's just colder today than it is normally. Maybe it's only the fact that I am sick, that is undeniable. I can't confirm any of these things.
I slump out of bed and am met with a dizzy haze. The world feels slow — because of me standing up so suddenly and quickly, my vision is delayed, then fades back to normality. I rub my eyes and groan out a yawn, trailing into my living room. I collapse onto the living room couch and click on the tv, hoping to watch the morning programs of the day as usual. I hear a knocking which makes me jolt from my spot. I fall into a sweet ease when I realize it's nothing — only the daily paper. Never do people knock on my door unless it's for the paper. But then there's another knock.
My curiosity gets the best of me, and I slowly trail away from the couch, towards the front door. The door swings open and tufts of cold air hit me across the face, sending shivers down my body. Before me, Ponyboy stands. His hands and finger tips are red from the cold, and when he breathes, I can see his air fog up infront of me. He smiles, holding on tightly to his winter coat. "Hey, Johnnycake!" He smiles. I smile back. "Oh, Ponyboy! What a surprise . ." I croak out a cheer, being interrupted by a sniffle. "Sorry —" I apologize "Oh, gee, Johnny! You don't sound too good." Ponyboy marks, furrowing his brows into a worried stare. "Just a cold," I assure. "Nothing too bad." "Okay, if you say so." Ponyboy replies, looking down and kicking the ice infront of him with his snow boot. "Hey, mind if I come in?" He asks, shooting his head up and grazing me with a grin. I nod, moving over so he can come inside. He steps in, crouching down next to the door and taking his boots off. He tucks his boots away in a corner and his velvety red socks make soft noises as he walks towards the coat rack, taking his jacket in his hands and carding it into a slot. He now wears black skinny jeans and a long sleeved sweater, same color as his socks; a comfortable dark red. He smiles. "Like what you see?" He jokes. "So what if I do — is it a crime?" I reply, walking up to him and placing my hands against his chest as he wraps his arms around my waist. "Maybe so." He whispers, engulfing me in a hug as he nestles his face into the crook of my neck. We stay this way for awhile, keeping eachother warm in this winter cold.
