I was really anxious to talk to Spencer. What was I even supposed to tell him? After another practice for the deb ball, I made my way to the snack bar to find Spencer working. I sat down and glanced up at him several times. He made his way over to me and sat down at the bar.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"It's complicated," I said.
"Okay, well. I have a fifteen minute break," he explained.
"Okay... Um. Jere and I. We kissed... And he admitted to having feelings and I-" I started.
"You like him too," he finished.
"Yeah..."
"So you want to break up?" He asked.
I placed my hands on his reassuringly.
"If you need to keep this charade, that's fine. I don't want you to get hurt. I don't know what your situation is with your mom," I explained.
"No. It's okay. I've actually been thinking of telling her. After Jeremiah and I kissed, I realized it could have gotten out... I don't want her to hear it from anyone other than me," he sighed.
"I'm here for you, you know that," I repeated.
"I know," he said. "Tonight at dinner, we can talk about it."
He walked back to work, and I could feel my shoulders loosen. I looked over to Jere to see him smiling at me from his post.
We're telling them tonight
I could see Jere looking at his phone. After he read the message, I could see him get all excited. He could barely hold himself together. I laughed even though I dreaded my mom's reaction... When we all sat down for dinner, everything seemed as normal.
"You two have any plans for tonight?" Jolene asked.
There was a moment of silence, followed by the sound of silverware hitting the plate. I looked over to Spencer worriedly.
"No, actually... Um, mom?" Spencer called. "Can I talk to you about something?"
Jolene nodded, and they left to the other room.
"Did something happen?" My mom asked as she sipped on her wine.
"I should probably fill you in on what they're talking about," I sighed. "Spencer is gay mom."
"What? Sweetie, are you okay?" She asked, grasping my hand to comfort me.
"Yeah. No, I'm fine. I've known for a while," I explained.
"But you both still pretended? Why?" She asked.
"Spencer wasn't out to his mom. And... I just wanted you to be happy," I said.
"Sweetheart, I was going to be happy as long as you were," she said.
Jer was right...
"Mom, can I tell you something then?" I asked.
"Of course," she smiled.
"I've been spending a lot of time with Jeremiah Fisher this summer, and... We were thinking we might try to... date," I explained.
She hugged on to me tightly. I smiled and hugged her back.
"I'm so happy for you, sweetheart. Jeremiah's a sweet boy," she said happily.
"He really is," I said.
I heard a slam of a door, and I looked toward it. I looked back at mom worriedly.
"Go, check on Spence," she ordered. "I'll handle things here with Jolene."
I nodded to her and rushed outside. I looked around to see Spencer starting the car. I ran and caught up to him before he pulled out of the driveway. I sat down next to him and looked over at him.
"What happened? Are you okay? Do you want to get out of here?" I asked.
"Bad, no, and yes," he said.
"Let me drive. You're too upset right now," I offered.
He nodded, and we switched seats. I pulled out, and we popped on some music and just started driving.
"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked.
"She thinks I'm the bad guy," he explained. "She thinks that I just forced things on to you, whether it was the relationship or me trying something, and it was all just an excuse.."
I pulled off to the side of the road and parked the car before looking at him.
"She doesn't understand. It can be shocking. It's something that you've known for a long time, and something she found out half an hour ago," I explained
I rubbed his shoulder as he looked down at the ground. I felt so bad that it didn't go the way it should have.
"I just... I wished she would've taken my word," he said.
"I know," I replied, hugging him. "It's going to be okay. I told my mom... We'll figure it out. I promise."
He nodded into my shoulder, starting to cry a little bit. We just sat there, though. He needed me. He needed someone he could trust, a shoulder to lean on. At one point, he had calmed himself down, only to quickly fall asleep in the car. I drove us back to the house only to get a call from my mom. I answered it, but held the phone to my ear to keep it quiet.
"Hey, is everything alright?" I asked.
"I think so, but they both got so upset tonight I asked Susannah if you both could sleep over. I don't know if Spence is still mad, but I think it'd be good for them both to fully calm down," she explained.
"Alright, sounds good. We're on our way back now," I said.
"Is he doing any better?" Mom asked.
"It just went different than he expected," I explained. "He just wanted to be accepted."
"I know sweetheart... Jolene is thinking of taking them back early. But I'll make sure that if Spence needs it he can fly back anytime," she explained.
"Okay. Should I tell him?" I asked.
"Leave it for tonight. I'll try to talk to him tomorrow," she responded.
"Alright, I'll see you tomorrow," I said.
