I spent every last bit of time at the Fisher's for the rest of the summer. Belly and Conrad had finally admitted that they were seeing each other, and we all enjoyed our last days. We all decided to leave the same day, though, as there was nothing for my mom and I to stick around for. I packed the last bits of the car, only to close the trunk and find Jere standing next to me.

"I don't know if I'll be able to handle being far away from you," Jere commented.

His eyes told me that he was being sincere. He tucked some hair behind my ear and kissed me softly. It was really hitting me. This was all just summer. What if it was only summer for him? I didn't even know where he lived.

"Hey, hey, breathe," he said softly, rubbing my back.

"I'm going to miss you," I said, curling up in his embrace.

"Then we'll break the distance," he smiled.

I looked up at him. He was all I could've dreamed for. It was because of that that I was scared... I loved him... Wait... I loved him? I looked into his blue eyes and kissed him, wanting to clear my thoughts.

"Sorry to interrupt," my mom called.

We pulled apart and looked to see her waiting.

"We should get going," I sighed, looking back at Jere.

He gripped onto my hand one last time and walked me to the driver's seat, opening the door for me.

"Drive safe," he said.

I smiled and kissed him on the cheek before sitting down. We drove off, and just like that, our last summer was truly over. The last summer with my father... Though it really hadn't been. We arrived back home and things were quiet. There was still another couple of weeks until school. After a week or so as we sat down for dinner in complete silence, my mom and I hadn't talked much at all since she dumped my dad's ashes.

"I want us to move," she said plainly.

"To where?"

"New York, close to the Fisher's," she said.

"What?" I questioned.

This seemed unreal in more ways than one.

"You know this isn't working," she sighed. "Living here. It's too hard. Susannah needs help... And you and Jere... It just makes more sense."

"To pick up and leave?" I asked.

"It's a little closer to Grandma and Grandpa anyway," she explained further.

I stared down at my plate... I'd be in New York...?

"Y/n? There's nothing wrong with that is there?" she asked.

"No... Nothing I suppose," I said.

Just like that boxes were packed and by the end of the week we were in New York. It was weird leaving our home, but not heartbreaking. We had moved before so it wasn't like it was the family home I'd had all my life. That house was the house my dad died in. The house we moved to after he had been diagnosed. When we arrived at the new house it was empty. It was serene. Quiet. There would be no real furniture for the most part for another few days. I looked down at my phone to see a text from Susannah.

Susannah: Please come over before I blow the surprise!

I smiled at the message before hopping back in the car and driving the 20 or so minutes it took to get to the Fisher's. I knocked on the door only for my favourite blue-eyed man to answer the door.

"Y/n? What are you doing here?" he asked.

I smiled, "We moved."

He quickly picked me up and spun me around out of excitement. He needed me, so I was there. He stopped the spinning but still held me up high and kissed me.

"Alright you two, go. Have some cute date," Susannah said, shooing us.

She shoved us out the door and handed Jere his keys. He seemed somber for a moment before looking back at me and grabbing my hand. He was having a hard time being apart from his mom and I could see it. He led me to his car.

"Where to Fisher?" I asked as I sat in his car.

"Its no fun if you know where we're going," he said, starting the car.

I smiled as he pulled out, grabbing his hand as soon as it lifted from the gear shift. I lissed him on the cheek as he navigated several streets before parking. He had brought us to a classic 50's diner. We sat down in a booth and a waitress brought menus by. I watched the girls skate around the diner and the conversations between patrons.

"You like it?" He asked.

"I love it," I smiled. "This place is amazing."

"Mom and I order from here a lot. Since its so close by," he said.

I looked down at the menu, seeing many different meals I thought I'd enjoy. Jere grasped onto my hand. I looked up at him, he had a soft smile and his eyes had a slight bit of that somberness fro before.

"I'm really glad you're here N/n," he said softly.

"I am too."

"Are you really?" He asked.

I was happy. I had him. He knew that a part of me held back from that happiness though. I told him before about how much I loved our home and how it still felt like my dad. It was a change, but it was one I was trying to embrace.

"I am. I'm with you," I cheesily replied.

It was how I felt though.

"Good," he toothily grinned. "Cause now I can't let you go."

This made it worth it, milkshakes with Jere as the leaves started to turn gorgeous autumn colors.
