The last battle of the First Age lasted over many years. We managed to talk the Valar into overpowering Morgoth with their power. Humans and elves met to fight against evil.
In this war, I became a Dragon Slayer. Anger at the loss of so many loved ones and years of intense training drove me forward. My mother acknowledged that she didn't have to watch me all the time. She just ordered me to stay away from the fire demons, the Balrogs, because I wasn't good enough for defeating them.
We won the war and Morgoth was overpowered.
Many elves subsequently decided to leave Middle-earth. Those who remained were ruled by the High King Gil-Galad.
And my mother met Oropher.
