Elven wine is far stronger than any alcohol in Arda. A mere mortal will be intoxicated by a small amount. To get an elf drunk with another type of alcohol requires a large amount, which has backfired on many humans (and dwarves).
Thranduil knew his wine, and I never drank better wine than in the Forest. And I liked it to the point that I had a supply with me every time (at least two bottles).
