"Because-" Peter winces, glancing at you, "I couldn't."

You give him a low warning look, just so he doesn't spill too much. It would devastate the child to know how his story originated and you did not have the mental capacity to watch any more suffering from him. Besides, when Gwen was first recruited, there was a long discussion about Miles Morales. And there was one certain agreement you all had: don't tell him who and what he really is.

"I wanted to be with you guys so badly," Miles mumbles with his back still facing the two of you, his fingers still curled against the fenced flooring. "But this thing wasn't what I thought it was."

"Miles," You start, "Bad things will happen . . . Whether it's situations like this, or when someone out there falls ill; you can't stop it."

Peter slowly walks over to Miles and crouches down beside him, "It makes us who we are." He places his hand on his shoulder. "But good things happen too, you know?"

When Miles finally looks up, Peter gives him a small smirk, "Like you happened."

You follow and place yourself on the other side of Miles, gently nudging your shoulder against his, "And then Mayday happened."

The boy glances at you before looking at a giggling Mayday beside him. She reaches out and grabs Miles' arm, crawling up to his shoulder.

Miles flinches and struggles to control the squirming girl as he stands up, "Hey! I don't . . . listen . . ."

"You are so bad at holding a baby!" Peter laughs, standing up with him.

You get to your feet as well and smile at the awkward way Miles was holding Mayday; her belly facing down with his arms hooking under her neck and knees. Suddenly, just as Peter jokingly pats his hand on Miles' shoulder, his watch lit up.

"We got your location, Peter." Lyla's voice says calmly. "Inside the core."

You fill with panic as Peter tries to desperately say otherwise to her. You glance around the area, anticipating where they might infiltrate. The other spiders could jump in at any second, you just had to listen for them so you can take Miles--But you remember whose side you're on.

"You do not have my location, over!" Peter exclaims as Miles only watches in quiet sadness.

While Peter shouts endlessly at his watch, you tap Miles on the shoulder, taking Mayday into your arms. "Listen, Miles."

Mayday grins up at you and places her hand on your cheek, but you try to remain focused. Miles turns his attention to you, remaining strangely calm despite the situation, it was as though he was losing hope.

"This is difficult for me to admit, but I want to help you . . ." You look down at the innocent girl, "Only, I can't. I know you may think-"

Miles puts his hand on your shoulder, giving you a wry smile, "I saw what you went through earlier. I understand that it's kinda hard for you."

You let out a sigh mixed with relief and guilt, "Oh, ma douce . . . I just can't bring myself to get rid of this fear I have. I can't lose the one I love again." You wince, "This time, Miguel--or possibly everyone." (My sweet)

Miles frowns, taking his hand back, "Then you know why I can't lose my dad."

You frown back at him, "Touché . . . But now you know why I must stop you."

"You guys aren't gonna stop me." Miles gives you a determined look.

You give him a proud smile, "Reste fort." (Stay strong)
