"Ashiya good morning~"
"Good morning Ayaka-san~"
I smiled and waved at Ayaka, who waved back in return. Apart from the unusual amount of hate towards Class E, school life was a breeze for me. Truthfully, I should be feeling happy now, but somehow I couldn't. It was like there was something missing in my life, and without that I wouldn't be truly happy.
"Ashiya? What's wrong?"
She gave me a rather concerned look. Among everybody else, Ayaka seemed to the only one whom I could actually call a friend. Just a friend, and nothing more than that.
"Nothing's wrong, I was just thinking about something. Say, there's a history quiz today right?"
"Yes! Make sure you polish up on Japan history properly! I'll see you later Ashiya, I need to go to the library. Bye~!"
I watched the twin-tailed girl disappear out of sight and admired her enthusiasm. Students here took major pride in their intelligence, so tests were somehow a great priority among them. From here they would fight among themselves and weed out the below-average students from their ranks. How disgusting, this school is.
I took my seat at the window and took a look about. My classmates didn't 'feel' like classmates, they made only light conversations in class and absorbed into their self-studying. Compared to my previous school, this school was rather strict with everything. I sighed and took out my own book. At this rate, my hopes of having a fun school life with my friends were diminishing quickly.
Every day repeating the same routine. Not one of my classmates have any intention of hanging out together after school, the main excuse being that 'they have to study'. Soon I lost sight of what was fun too and sunk into the depths of boredom. I might as well die rather than stay in this living hell.
After school, I took a detour to walk pass the school field. As my eyes skimmed over the grounds, a strange sound entered my ears. It was the sound of a student. I peered around the PE store to find three people, two of them standing and the other on the ground. The two students laughed and kept kicking the one on the ground, who showed no resistance at all. The bullied one's face couldn't be seen, but he had spiked black hair.
"C'mon resist a little you bum, what is Class E without a little scream for help eh?"
"A national embarrassment, I might add. Don't try to cross us again, you hear?"
After one last kick, the two students began to walk away. I hid behind the mattress leaning against the wall til the two students left and rushed the third's aid. He had sores and bruises all over and he was half-unconscious. I took out a mini first-aid kit and hurriedly got to work. Soon, his eyes fluttered open, revealing a pale-gold color.
"Please wait a moment, I'm almost done."
"? You are..."
"My name is Ashiya Yuzuha. What's your name?"
He hesitated a little but answered anyway.
"I-Isogai Yuuma... Why... are you helping me?"
"? Isn't it obvious, I'm helping you because I want to."
"But I'm... from Class E..."
He averted my eyes and looked downwards, hiding his face behind bangs. I stopped for a moment, letting my hand holding the band-aid hover over his wound. So he accepted being bullied just because he was in Class E? How horrible. I resumed with treating his wounds while replying.
"It doesn't matter to me, classes and grades don't define a person. Here, can you stand up?"
He nodded but I still held him up anyways, worried that with that amount of damage he might not be able to walk properly. Still, he forced a smile.
"It's alright, I'll be fine from here. Thank you very much Ashiya-san."
"... You're welcome, see you later Isogai-kun."
Without another word, he bowed and took his leave from there, limping slightly as he did so. I knew that I had done my part, but it wasn't enough. If only I had interfered sooner, his injuries wouldn't have been so bad.
But then, something heavy like lead weighed my legs down, which refuse to let me take a step closer to him while he was being bullied. Never have I been so ashamed of myself before, to just watch someone being bullied from the sidelines. In short, I was also like the rest of them, wasn't I? Those scums which were the so-called excellent students of Kunugigaoka, wasn't I one of them too?
It's no use, I have no right to judge them all anyway. I was also one of those scumbags as well, aren't I?
Looks like I really am a coward, to not even try to defend the weak from the bully.
