CHAPTER FIVEnever ending.
THE SILENCE THAT OVERWHELMED THE ELEVATOR LIKE A FOGGY HAZE WAS BROKEN BY THE SOUND OF METAL, BANGING AGAINST ONE ANOTHER. Robin and Jennifer snapped their heads to the origin of the sound, finding Erica hitting the suspicious vial of liquid against a metal barrel. "Hey, hey! Careful, careful, careful!" Robin called out, rushing over to the young girl and quickly snatching the canister. "We don't even know what that is."
"Exactly. It could be useful." Erica defended. Jennifer let out a sharp breath, her mind racing with different possibilities as to what the green liquid could be.
"Useful how?" The short haired girl questioned, Jennifer looking at the young girl with furrowed brows.
"We can survive down here a long time without food, but if the human body doesn't get water, it will die." She spoke.
Jennifer took the vial from Robins hands, the cold metal sending shivers up her spine; the girl gently putting it back into the box they had found it in. "I hate to break it to you, but that is not water." Robin said, pointing to the green liquid in Jennifers hands.
"No, but it's a liquid." Erica sassed. "And if it comes down to me drinking that shit or dying of thirst, I drink."
Jennifer turned to the young girl, a hand on her hip. "And if it's a radioactive slime that'll kill us as soon as the thing opens?" Jennifer retaliated, Erica going quiet as she took the vial out of the box once again.
The two bickered for a moment, Robin turning her attention elsewhere until she rushed past the two muttering something. "Someone's coming." Jennifer and Erica furrowed their eyebrows before the electrical whirring sound Robin has heard moments earlier became clearer to the two.
Robin, Erica and Jennifer quickly rushed up to the roof of the elevator, Jennifer climbing up just after the younger girl. The sound of footsteps echoed just outside the metal door, Jennifer lifting her leg up and out of the small room her her shoelace got caught on what she assumed to be a rogue piece of metal sticking out.
She frantically pulled at her leg, her heart and mind racing as Steve quickly joined her, helping to pull her leg up and shut the hatch right as they heard the door sliding open. They sat silently on top of the elevator, looking through the grating of the roof silently at the Russian workers muttering to one another.
Eventually, after what had felt like hours of listening to the two Russians, they heard the door beginning to close and their vehicle moving away from the elevator. Steve was quick to grab the vial of liquid from Erica - which she had brought up with her when hiding -, jumping down the hatch and sliding it agains the floor, blocking the door momentarily from closing completely. "Let's go." Steve whisper-yelled, tossing the bags under the door before rushing Erica and the others under.
The vial began softly cracking causing for Steve to try speed things up, gently helping push Jennifer under with his hand slightly caressing her waist before dragging himself out from under the door. Just as he got out, the canister broke, the door slamming shut as the liquid began smoking, sizzling the floor beneath it and leaving holes where it was splattered. "And you wanted to drink that..." Jennifer muttered, scoffing playfully whilst Erica sent her a look.
"Holy mother of God." Dustin spoke aloud, the group turning to see what the boy was looking at. Behind them was long corridor; so long that they were unsure whether they could see where it ended or not. It seemed never ending, almost as if it were some of those mirror mazes considered the fact every part of the hall looked the exact same.
