CHAPTER THIRTY ONE

uncertainties.

"HEY, SINCLAIRS. HOW ARE THOSE, UH... THOSE SPEARS COMING ON?" Jennifer heard Eddie call out to the two siblings as she made her way down to him and Dustin. The two boys gave Jennifer a look of concern, the girl noticing it immediately no matter how hard they tried to keep it on the down low. 

Jennifer sat down on one of the small milk crates in the grass, grabbing hold of the trash-can lid and a handful of nails, getting ready to follow after Eddie and Dustin and hammer them into the lid. The two boys were silent for a few moments, continuing on with their shields until Eddie broke the somewhat awkward silence.

"Uh..." He murmured, clearing his throat. "I wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but I- it's fine if you don't want to-" Jennifer cut him off, giving him a bored look.

"Eddie, it's fine. What is it?" She asked.

"...who's Nicole?" He questioned eventually, Dustin looking up at Jennifer for a moment before looking back down at his hands. 

Jennifer kept quiet for a few moments before she decided to respond. "Nicole was my older sister. She, uh, died two years ago. From the Demodogs." Eddie was unsure of what to say, his eyes wandering over the girl before falling back to his fiddling hands. 

"I'm sorry..." Eddie murmured, Jennifer, assuring him that he had nothing to apologise for, but he still felt otherwise. He thought he'd understood why she was so concerned for the others when they'd been separated at Skull Rock, that her fear and concern were because she didn't want to lose anyone else as did he, but now he realised it was much more.

He'd realised that he couldn't relate or understand the way Jennifer felt. He'd realised that she wasn't just scared of someone else getting hurt, she was terrified that she'd lose someone else. That she'd be left alone yet again as she did when her sister died. When her Mother died.
