CHAPTER THIRTY

heartbreak.

"STEVE, IT'S FINE. IF HE SAW ME THEY WOULD'VE IDENTIFIED ME WHEN THEY IDENTIFIED EDDIE." Jennifer tried to reassure him. They'd pulled up at The War Zone a few minutes ago, Steve believing that it would be safer if Jennifer were to wait in the caravan with Eddie, Dustin, and Lucas in case Jason had seen her when the two were in the boat on Lovers Lake, and thus resulting in her being a wanted individual. Though Steve partially agreed that the sheriff would have identified her on the news, concern continued to bubble up in his chest.

"Whatever we're doing, we should do it soon." Robin noted, the others waiting for the two to make a decision. 

Steve sighed, slowly and reluctantly nodding his head, Jennifer had to stop the gleeful smile from showing on her face. "Alright. But stay with me, okay?" He compromised, Jennifer more than happy to agree with his conditions. 

When they walked inside, it was busier than they'd expected. People walking through the somewhat spacious isles talking loudly to one another. Banners and flags hung up above them signing where each item was located; knives, survival, and so forth. "So much for avoiding angry hicks." Robin commented, looking around at those occupying the store.

"Let's be... fast." Nancy said, Robin and Erica swiftly agreeing. The group had dispersed, Erica dropping item after item into the large trolley she was pushing, and Max wandering around all the aisles. Robin and Jennifer stood together, looking at the smaller-sized kerosene canisters, Steve wandering up from behind them wearing a new shirt and jacket. 

"How many of these do you think we need?" Robin asked him.

"Five or six." Steve said quickly dropping them into the shopping cart. As the couple filled the cart, they soon noticed Robin was too distracted to move a muscle, the two looking up to see her staring at Vickie from across the store. 

A smile etched its way onto Jennifer's face, sucking her bottom lip between her teeth to stop it from getting too wide. "What are you gonna do? Stand a gawk?" Steve questioned, Robin quickly telling him to 'shut up'. The girl took a step forward, her heart racing as she built up the courage to talk to the girl whom she'd been crushing on for God knows how long, though, she stumbled back when a man approached her from behind, the two sharing a seemingly flirtatious conversation for a few moments before sharing a kiss.
