Two weeks had passed and I was beginning to lose weight, and fast. I could even see my ribs. My body had been in the worst pain I could have ever imagined. It's was as if I was just watching myself waste away in this hospital room. Sometimes I was so weak I couldn't even walk myself to the bathroom.
The doctor had said, "The cancer, chronic leukemia, had spread through my blood and bone marrow. You have an abnormal amount of white blood cells. On the plus side, this is a slow spreading cancer compared to acute leukemia, but you still have to go through treatments to be cured." I didn't know what any of that meant. But one thing I did know was that it scared the heeby jeebies out of me.
Today we were going start my first treatment and I was sure it would be painful. I looked up at the plain clock on the bare white wall and dreaded that very move. I had about two minutes before they would come in and take over my body. I had heard you weren't yourself through the next few months. If you even made it, that is. I let out a shaky breath and looked at my mom. She had dark circles under her steel gray eyes. And it seemed she gained new worry wrinkles on her forehead. Her red hair was pulled back in a messy pony. She looked like a wreck, and I knew it was because she was one.
"Mom...I'm scared." I said. She smiled sadly at me.
"I know guppy. I'll be here though, always." The door opened and doctors filed in with medical stuff that I didn't want to look at. I glanced at my mom with watering eyes. She laid a comforting hand on mine. I felt a new poke, and I knew they were putting in a new IV. Probably with something that would knock me out, and I was right. My head became foggy and my gray eyes began to droop. My worries from earlier began to fade as numbness took its place.
