I walked through the never ending dark halls. My palms were sweating and my heart was racing in my chest. The halls smelled of disinfectant. I willed my legs to go faster but my weak bones gave out and I fell to the ground. I looked behind me and more panic bubbled up in my chest. A nurse wearing blue scrubs and a mask made her way over to me with an over sized needle. Her eyes were a menacing red. She closed in on the distance between us and I let out a heart wrenching scream.
Suddenly, hands were on my shoulders and my eyes shot open. It was just a nightmare. My breathing was thick and heavy, my skin felt like it was on fire, and my vision seemed like I was looking through a foggy tunnel. The doctor said these were all side effects of the treatment and it was normal. I looked at my father, he was standing above me with regretful brown eyes. He knew I would be in immense pain when I started the treatment.
"Guppy, what hurts?" he asked looking around frantic. I wouldn't make him suffer also.
"I'm fine, dad." I croaked. "Go home and rest. You have to go back to work." It was true, my dad was in construction and my mom taught first grade, they hardly made enough money to support Jake and I, let alone a cancer patient. He needed all of the hours he could get. "No, Winter. I'm staying with you." I sighed, I didn't want to do this, but it looked like I had to. "I just want to be alone" I whispered and turned away from him. He inhaled sharply but I heard him stand. His lips were on my forehead, kissing me softly. "I love you Guppy. Hang tight, and we will see you tomorrow." And he left the room to join the rest of my heartbroken family at home. Silent tears rolled down my cheeks as I realized their lives would never be normal again, because of me. I cried myself to sleep that night.
