Just before her eighteenth birthday, Maya had gone to stay with Alivia for a few days.
Indeed, Carina had offered her the ticket to go with the one she, Mason and Maya had given to Katherine's mother to the Lady Gaga concert. She had arrived at her grandmother's a few days before the concert. She had spent some of her vacation time at Granny Gaga's before the start of the school year. And on August 21st, they were off to the concert in Tacoma. Being at her grandmother's had been both beneficial and painful for the blonde. Alivia really adored Carina, and although it hurt her to talk about her, it also did her a lot of good. At home, she didn't really dare talk about the brunette because her father didn't like her. Granny Gaga, on the other hand, had accepted the Italian from the very first second and had understood about them straight away.
But she hadn't forgotten the other thing that made her feel good. Running. Even on vacation with her grandmother, she hadn't stopped running.
So Maya spent her vacations running, before returning to Seattle University to study for a Masters in Sports Business Leadership. The courses didn't interest her much, but the Track and Field and Cross Country options did.
Her body had changed completely. She was more muscular than before. She ate nothing but vegetables and pasta. For months, she'd been running. Running everywhere. She didn't drive anymore, she did everything by running, she only went everywhere that way and she had also joined the gym at her university.
She lived with Andy on campus, who was studying medicine. They had both signed up to be volunteer firefighters, which once again gave Maya the chance to take her mind off things.
Ryan was at the police academy. Her times had been exceptional when she'd been with Carina, love had given her wings, but since the brunette's departure, Maya had beaten her own records, even more impressively.
The blonde had come to see Andy, who was with some classmates, before going to the gym as she did every evening.
-"Does your friend ever change her sweater?" Eliza asked Andy once the blonde had left.
- "it has... Sentimental value."
- "so much so that she puts it on come rain, shine, snow or shine; minus ten or thirty degrees..."
- "it... It belongs to her exe"
- "ex... Ex, or like, ex is she gonna get back together with?"
- "unless the U.S. and Italy merge into one country, there's not much chance, her ex is back home in Sicily."
- "back?"
- "she 'won' a year's study at our old high school, they fell in love, but Carina had to go back home to Sicily."
- "her, eh?" She smiled slightly.
- "yes her"
- "so... this Carina she's no longer in the picture?"
- "no, but don't bother you. Maya hasn't slept with a girl in months, since Carina left.
And the last girl who tried to kiss her, without her consent, still remembers. I think the loan of her body is etched forever in my boyfriend's parents' couch."-"How many months?"
- "months as in, since last mid-July"
- "seven months ... The statute of limitations has expired..."
- "I have my doubts, plus it's been two years, give or take a few days, since they first spoke... And I know she doesn't take it well. She's been going to the gym morning and night for a week now".
-"I don't mind taking her mind off it".
-"I would have warned you, but it's at your own risk. Carina was... Is everything to her, even today. Sometimes she says her name when she's asleep, or wakes up with a start in the night... See Bella in Twilight New Moon? Well, it's nothing compared to Maya..."
