The walk to the entrance was quiet, it was still far and while the quiet was nice and not uncomfortable, Rei wanted to take advantage of this moment to talk to him. Maybe he is just as lonely as her.

''Say Ayanami-san, aren't you afraid of piloting Unit 00?'' Funny that her brain came in with that question first.

He didn't falter in his steps when he answered ''Why?''

She flustered a bit with how inexpressive he is ''I heard that you were hurt pretty badly in an earlier experiment, so I thought you might be...''

''Aren't you Commander lkari's daughter?'' he interrupted her.

An akward pause from her ''Yes.''

''Don't you have faith in your own father's work?'' he turned to her, looking directly to her eyes. Red, his eyes were so red and intense, he was almost a head taller than her. Something whispers in her head about comradery, family; a softness in his jaw and cheekbones that makes her lower her guard when she focuses on them.

''Of, of course not!'' she spluttered ''How could I trust him?'' looking down, she tried to reign in her emotions, rage and embarrasement swirling.

''Ikari-san'' he stopped, knowing at this point that Rei would follow his example, eye contact was made again ''your father has sacrificed much to this world, he's admirable, even if he were to regret any of it he wouldn't turn back'' his tone of voice didn't even change through this.

With a tight throat, she managed to say in a whisper ''Do you admire a man that abandons his daughter when she needs him?''

''That's irrelevant, humanity needs him more'' where is his emotion? He just sounds like he's repeating something scripted.

''But do you?''

He did not answer, and she did not press anymore. They arrived to Nerv, and the silence was suffocating now.

''Shinji-kun, can you hear me?'' Ritsuko-san asked him. Rei was there with everyone else, cradiling a cup of hot tea and Kaji-san besides her.

Rei's vision was wandering toward her father, his back straight and hands holding behing, gaze focused on Ayanami's activation trial. The conversation she had with the boy about an hour ago replaying in her head.

'Sacrfice' huh?

''Yes'' said boy answered.

''We will now commence the Unit 00 re-activation experiment.''

''Commence first connection.'' ''Connecting main power supply.'' ''Activation voltage has passed
the critical point.'' ''Roger.''

A flurry of comments and movement around the room, everyone doing their tasks. Rei was distracted by Kaji-san handing her a piece of the chocolate bar he was eating. Turns out, he likes dark, bitter chocolate; not Rei's favorite but she ate it none the less.

''Approaching the critical mark for synchrony.'' ''2.5 more.''

''1 .7...''

''0.6...''

''0.5...''

''0.4...''

''0.3...''

''0.2...''

''0.1, and rising.''

Everyone was waiting with a held breath, Kaji-san said before that issues happened at this point with previous trial. A heartbeat passed.
