''Good morning!'' Said Kaji-san while finishing breakfast when Rei came into the room.

Seeing someone up and cooking for her is still something new to Rei, it took her a moment for her to answer her weak ''Morning.''

After a nice and simple Japanese breakfast eaten calmly, Rei asked ''Are you really coming to school today?''

Kaji looked up from his work screen ''Of course I am! It's for your future plans meeting.''

''But you're really busy at work.''

''It's fine Rei-chan, it's fine; it's all part of the job.''

A little emptiness pierced her heart with how carelessly he said that ''Your job, huh?''

The quiet of the apartment was broken by the doorbell and a yell of her name from her friends. Kaji went to answer the door while she picked up the plates.

''Hi boys!'' There was a beat of silence when he was looking at her friends, Rei at his back, so she couldn't see his expression ''Its so nice of you to come all the way over to pick Rei-chan up! She'll be right out.~''

''Kaji-san, it's embarrassing if you use that singsong voice at people'' Rei nudges him to the side ''Morning guys'' she smiled at them, noting how nervous they looked, this is why she asked Kaji not to use that tone of voice at people; it weirds them out.

Kaji-san laughed a little, moving along her push ''Alright, alright Rei-chan, I'll see you guys later then!''

With that, he saw them out and closed the door once they were at the end of the hallway.

''Sorry for that guys, he's a weirdo sometimes.''

''Don't worry about it Rei, we know he is like that because he cares about you'' said Kensuke.

''Yeah, I guess having a girl for a friend comes with the family giving their version of protectiveness.''

The word 'family' made her chest warm for a second time that day, but the memory of Kaji-san's comment about his work made that feeling recede.

''I don't think its anything like that'' Both boys looked at her like she had a second head ''I mean, it's his job to take care of me while we live together; things like family are not added to that.''

''Well, yes, but that applies to like accidents and someone coming at you violently, not about making sure the other person's aquiantances are not bad news.''

''Aren't girls supposed to be smart about things like this?'' Toji added his opinion, unhelpfully.

''Hey!''

The rest of the walk to school was up tranquil. For her own heart's sake, she didn't think of their words anymore.

It was around midday that a red sports car came in fast and parked in view of Rei's classroom. Most of the boys were looking out and raving about the car. Things changed when Kaji-san came out of it, freshly shaven and properly dressed; once he was on view, Rei saw all her female classmates replace the boys by the windows. The comments the girls were making about Rei's guardian made her feel a little uncomftable, not used to having the attention on her by proxy of him.

Classes resumed once the bell rang, and Rei thanked whatever deity that made things calm down enough for her to continue her education.
