on friday december 19th, riki woke up excited as usual. today was the last day before winter break. he would go to school and hang out with his friends and be able to enjoy the more lax classwork that a day before vacation normally offered.

but even better than break day, it was tutoring day with y/n.

after school was all over he would get to walk home with her and hang out just the two of them and help her finish the assignments she needs done before the end of today. they always did a lot more of the hanging out part than the actual work part but they always got it done in the end and still had a good time.

since it was now nearing holiday time, niki decided to prepare some things to do together when she came over. before leaving for school, he set out the christmas cookies for them to make and decorate, the movies he picked out to watch while eating, and a christmas present he planned on giving her early.

was it excessive ? maybe. was it too much ? for her, he'd give so much more.

niki set off for school ready to have one of the best days of the school year and hang out with all the best people he knew.

unfortunately for him, he arrived half a period late for the first time since the beginning of the year and got one period of lunch detention. but still, everything was going to be okay. it was just a minor setback. it barely shook him, knowing he had much more to be happy about than lunch.

after a brief scolding from the lady in the attendance office, he went off to what was left of his first class. but it was strange. when he walked in, everyone was writing. why would they be writing unless they were doing work ?

oh.. they are. huh, weird.

but despite being late he still managed to catch up and barely finish his work by the time the bell rang. oh the bell, the bell that announced first period was officially over and it was time to go to second. second period with her. how he loved the sound of that bell.

he happily turned in his work and bolted off into the hall to go wait by the door of the class. he knew y/n was often late to morning classes, especially when she caught yeji in the halls on the way there, so he wasn't worried when the warning bell rang and she didn't show up yet. though, he was a tad disappointed when the actual bell rang and she still wasn't there.

he was late today too and it was almost-break-day. he couldn't blame y/n for not being there yet. he talked to jungwon while he waited and they joked and laughed for a good while. though it was fun, he couldn't keep his eyes off the door hoping she would walk in any second. don't be mistaken, he loved talking to his friends but he was still waiting for her.

finally, the door opened. but it wasn't who he was hoping for it to be. it was the teacher, who he had been too mentally preoccupied to notice wasn't in the room before. as the room started to quiet down little by little, the sounds of laughter and vague conversation fading, everyone's desk received a packet with the front cover labeled "PRE-WINTER RECESS EVALUATION"

a test...

as the test packets were being handed out, finally the person he was waiting for walked in and smiled at him before sitting down. the second he heard the door open he looked up and almost immediately their eyes met and he felt like he might never be able to look away. and then she smiled.

now he definitely wouldn't be able to look away.

he smiled back and his eyes followed her all the way to her seat never once breaking contact. eventually, she looked down at the packet and back at him with a slight frown—his exact reaction to the test.
