12 year old y/n stood up against the wall in her 7th grade math class waiting for her name to be called to receive her new assigned seat.

"Han Y/n. Middle table, right seat"

she picked her binder up off the floor before sitting in her new seat. completely uninterested in anything that came after, she went on her phone as names continued being called.

going down the alphabetically arranged list of names for a solid 5 minutes and still, the seat next to y/n remained empty.

"Nishimura Riki. Middle table, left seat"

she gave the boy nothing but a quick glance as he sat down and continued on her phone while seats were being filled.

funny enough, she never even noticed he was in that class before. and now she would be sitting next to him for the next 3 and a half months... or until whenever their teacher decided to move seats again.

the rest of the class went by quick. per usual, the teacher asked kids to discuss the work with their partners and the room stayed so silent you could hear a pin drop. this classroom was never a talkative one.

for that entire first day, y/n didn't think or wonder anything about this nishimura riki. to her, he was just the boy who sat next to her in math...

the second day of being seatmates with riki went just about as unexpected as you could imagine.

y/n had been observing him yesterday at lunch, as well as earlier that day as she saw him around the halls.

he seemed quiet but had a good amount of friends. from what she saw, he was just a quiet guy who likes to keep to himself, yet doesn't stay too closed off for the sake of his friends.

"he's friends with sunghoon," y/n thought. her and sunghoon have been somewhat of acquaintances over the last year. he was always nice to her despite belonging in a very different crowd of people. she liked sunghoons personality. he was confident and outgoing, but not overwhelming. being around him gave her a little boost of energy. recently, they've been talking more and have become more of friends rather than acquaintances.

while passing the whole group of friends in the hall, sunghoon stopped her to say hi. they exchanged a few words with riki listening and looking on from the side.

"i sit next to her in math. i didn't know you were friends" he says as they walk away.

"ah yeah i've known y/n for a while"

12:01pm

"he's already here. how did he get here so early..." y/n wonders as she walks into math to see that this riki boy is already in his seat.

"hi."

who was that...
oh.

"hi" she responds as she looks over at the boy next to her.

"i didn't know you and sunghoon were friends."

"oh. i didn't know you were friends with him either." she replies as riki continues to make small talk.

12:06pm

as class starts, y/n wonders why riki suddenly wanted to talk to her. he seemed so... energetic too. she thought he was quiet all the time. turns out, the kid can definitely ramble for quite a while.

through the entire lesson riki and y/n continue to talk and she warms up to him.

she liked being around him. she liked talking to him.

the more she looked at him she realized he had a very nice face. she wasn't paying attention to it before but wow, he's gorgeous.

as the days passed, the two spoke more and more and grew closer and closer. y/n had gotten so comfortable with him so fast.

"you could call me riki or niki. i don't mind either from friends"

friends...

at this point it was safe to say y/n had developed a bit of a crush.

just a bit.

[end flashback]

walking into 2nd period global history, the now 15 year old y/n was not expecting to find niki, her middle school crush who she had barely talked to since 7th grade, inside the room with his name on the attendance sheet.
