CHAPTER VIII: Untold Truths

The journey back home from their wedding was a study in silence. The car's interior was suffused with an air of unresolved tension, the weight of the ceremony and the unspoken complexities lingering heavily between Haechan and Areum.
Outside, the world moved in a blur, a stark contrast to the stillness within the vehicle. Words that were left unsaid hung in the air, a testament to the uncharted path they now treaded together, their future shaped by circumstances beyond their control.
-
Haechan unlocked the door to their own house and brought in the bags for them. The night was dark and both of them were tired from the wedding.
"Follow me" Haechan said and Areum followed
Haechan brought both of them to the second floor where all the rooms are located in. The bright white interior was new to Areum as it was far from how her house was.
Haechan finally stopped on his tracks "This will be your room" Haechan said. Understanding that Areum might not want to share a room with him.
He opened the door and brought in her suitcases "Uh.. if you need anything, my room is just the opposite of your room" He pointed at the door opposite
"Alright, thanks" Areum thanked him for carrying her suitcases and was about to close the door when Haechan stopped her midway "Wait"
Areum faced Haechan again but this time he had an apologetic look "Can we talk?"
Areum sighed "Haechan, it's nearly 1 in the morning and i'm tired. Let's just talk tomorrow"
"Alright, I understand. Good night"
-
The next morning came and Areum woke up with a sore body.
"That wedding gown was something else" She said to herself. She took a shower and went downstairs.
Areum went to the kitchen and when she was about to make herself breakfast, she saw pancakes covered with saran wrap placed on the dining table. There was a sticky note on top of it so she picked it up to read it.
I made these for you, I really tried so i'm sorry if it tastes weird. I'm out with my dad to play golf. We'll talk once I come home in a few hours. Have a great day, Areum.

Areum can't help but to carve a small smile after reading the note. She sat down and tried the pancakes he made. It was salty. She chuckled at the taste of the pancake she ate.
Just then, a female voice greeted her "You must be Mrs. Lee"
Areum turned around and took in the figure that's standing behind her. It was the housekeeper. She was probably in her mid fifties. She bowed to Areum and Areum stood up
"There's no need to bow," She smiled "And yes i'm Areum, what about you?"
"I'm Lee Jisu. Nice meeting you, I've been taking care of Sir Haechan's house for about a year now. He's always alone here so it's nice to know that he has someone to accompany him now. Congratulations on your wedding, I wish you both nothing but happiness" She smiled
Areum forced a smile, reminded that this was all a marriage of convenience.
"Um.. did he made the pancakes himself?" Areum asked and she nodded "He woke up pretty early and told me he'd be doing the breakfast today. 'I wanted to make a breakfast for my wife' he said" The housekeeper chuckled thinking it was cute
Areum was flabbergasted and naturally her mouth carved into a smile.
"I didn't see you last night?" Areum said "Oh yeah, that's because I only come here during the weekdays. And whenever Sir Haechan goes to a work trip, i'll be sleeping here" She explained and Areum nodded
"You said earlier on that he's always alone? He.. didn't have like girls over or anything like that?" Areum asked out of curiosity
She quickly waved her hand as a sign of no "Sir Haechan is far from that type of person. Apart from his sister, he has never brought a girl here before, you are the first. It's a relief that the first girl she brought here was his wife"
Areum nodded, understanding what she just said
-
It was around 2pm and Areum was sitting on the living room when she heard the door opening and Haechan appeared, placing down his golf stand bag.
"You're back. You wanted to talk last night?" She asked and Haechan nodded and approached her at the living room. He sat beside her
"Areum," He started, waiting for her to face him and when she finally did he continued talking "I know you hate me, and I know everything feels like a burden to you. If the reason that you feel that way was because of the past, I just want you to know that I will always be sorry for what I did to you"
"This marriage. It's more than an alliance for me. There's nothing more that I want right now than for us to be able to focus on the future and forgot about the past" He added
"Haechan," Areum started but her voice cracked because of the tears that's starting to build up in her eyes "Like I said, forgetting about the past doesn't change what you did. It doesn't erase the hurt"
"Give me a chance to explain what happened, please" Haechan said and Areum scoffed
"After 5 years? Really?" She was in disbelief "You know I waited for you in that damn restaurant for hours to hear your explanation, right? And what did you do? You went back to Korea, Haechan. I already gave you a chance to explain yourself back then and you blew it off. I don't need them anymore, it's useless now" She said and immediately left to her room.
"Wait- but," Haechan said but she was already out of sight. Haechan was confused as he thought Areum knew why he went back to Korea so urgently but she clearly doesn't.
