CHAPTER XXII : Emotional Storm

-Present-

The sterile scent of a hospital room enveloped Haechan as he slowly regained his consciousness. The rhythmic beeping of monitors echoed in his ears, and he felt the weight of bandages across his body. A mix of relief and worry clear on Hanni's face, that was sitting by his bedside.

"What... happened?" Haechan slowly tried to sit up on the bed and Hanni quickly helped him with it. Hanni's eyes met his, a bunch of emotions in her gaze.

"You were shot and you had surgery. But don't worry you're going to be okay"

As Haechan's awareness sharpened, a frown etched across his face. The memory of what happened flashed across his mind.

"Areum... was she really behind this?"

His sister hesitated, choosing her words carefully "Oppa, it's complicated. We're still figuring things out"

Restlessness surged within Haechan as he glared at the medical strings tethering him to the bed. With a sudden burst of frustration, he attempted to pull them off, the monitors responding with erratic beeping.

"I need to find out the truth! I can't stay here"

Hanni, alarmed, reached for him, trying to calm his agitation "Oppa, stop! You need to rest! Please just let us handle this, okay?"

In the quiet hum of the room, Haechan's frustration gave way to a torrent of emotions. His eyes now welled up with tears as the weight of uncertainty pressed upon him.

Hanni sensed Haechan's confusion so she reached out and gently placed a comforting hand on his "It's going to be okay, Oppa"

But Haechan, usually the pillar of strength, found himself grappling with vulnerability. He looked at his sister, his voice choked with emotion.

"I really need to know Hanni, please. Is Areum really capable of this?"

Hanni, understanding the depth of his heartache, squeezed his hand reassuringly. She sighed realising she can't hold him from this information anymore.

"For now, yes.. she was behind it with Jake. But the team are yet to confirm it"

Haechan collapsed into heart-wrenching sobs, his tears flowing uncontrollably as both his hands gripped his own hair. The information his sister had just told him, unleashing a torrent of grief that seemed to consume him entirely.

Hanni hugged her brother as he clings onto her "We'll figure it out together, Oppa. Areum unnie loves you. I'm sure this is all just a terrible misunderstanding"

As Haechan sobbed in her arms, Hanni's mind wanders and it got her second thinking about everything.

Why would she? Everything Areum had with her brother, was that all an act?

-2 Days After-

Haechan paced anxiously, his frustration palpable. The team huddled, sharing uneasy glances.

"Are you absolutely certain it was Areum? I need to know!"

"All evidence is pointing to Song Shadows' direction, Haechan. And it's confirmed now that Areum was apart of it" Jisung spoke.

"We finally succeeded in hacking the cctv and she was found exchanging guns with Jake right before the attack" Chenle continued.

Haechan's disappointment was written across his face like a heavy burden "I trusted her. How could she do this?"

Hanni patted her brother's shoulder as a way of comforting him from this news. The room fell silent, the weight of betrayal hanging thick in the air.

Before Haechan can say anything, the door swings open. A solemn figure steps in.

"Haechan, I need to tell you something" Johnny said, trembling evident in his voice.

Haechan turns toward Johnny, sensing the gravity of the moment. Johnny's eyes convey sorrow, and his features contort with the pain of delivering a devastating news.

"Mark... he was hospitalised after the attack and.. he didn't make it. Mark's gone.. Haechan"

"No..." Haechan's voice almost cracked

Overwhelmed by frustration and betrayal, Haechan let out a primal scream and unleashed his anger on the wall with a forceful punch "Fuck!" As he recoiled from the impact, he muttered through gritted teeth.

"Areum.. I fucking hate you"

The old Haechan would have never expected this to come out from his own mouth but it did. He hates her. Mark, not only his right hand man but also his best friend for almost all his life, is gone. And it's all because of Areum.

Haechan's eyes turned dark, and with a determined edge to his voice "Jisung," He called.

Jisung immediately stood up and Haechan continued.

"I want you and Chenle to find Areum and.." He trailed off

"Tell everybody that it's war"
