CHAPTER XXIX : Silent Reckoning

❛ ━━・❪ ❁ ❫ ・━━ ❜

The morning sunlight filtered through the kitchen window, casting a warm glow on Areum as she moved gracefully between the stove and the countertops.

Haechan, drawn by the scent, went downstairs to find Areum cooking breakfast.

"Good morning" He started.

Areum looked up, there was a quiet acknowledgment in their gaze.

"I made breakfast. Have some before we leave to the warehouse"

As they sat down for breakfast, the atmosphere between them was awkward and quiet. The clinking of utensils against plates became a backdrop to unspoken thoughts, lingering beneath the surface.

Haechan cleared his throat and finally spoke "We need to discuss our final plan today before the actual attack"

Areum gave him a single hum, clearly still mad about last night. Haechan sighed and dropped his utensils before placing his hand on Areum's. Areum was caught off guard by it and immediately pulled her hand away.

"What time are we going to the warehouse?" Areum completely ignored his hand that was on hers a while ago.

Haechan cleared his throat "12 PM should be fine" He said and once again Areum replied to him with a hum.

"This needs to end soon. It's so hard being like this with Areum" Haechan thought.

The both of them continued eating in silence before getting ready for work.

-2 days later-

As the car moved toward the location where Areum's dad is hiding, a quiet exchange unfolded between Haechan and Areum.

"Are you okay? We're finally catching your dad"

Areum met his gaze and offered a half smile "Yeah. And you?"

"As long as you don't die, then yeah, i'm all good" Haechan said.

The both of them maintained eye contact for a while before Taeyong, in another car, spoke through their comms, breaking their eye contact.

"We're here, everyone focus" Taeyong said.

As Haechan and everyone approached Minwoo's hideout that seemed to look like an abandoned house.

Haechan, a silhouette against the shadows, signaled the group to halt. His eyes scanned the surroundings, analyzing the network of surveillance cameras that guarded the perimeter.

"Cameras are everywhere. We split up. Stay in the blind spots and move without being seen"

The team dispersed into three teams. Haechan, leading the way of his team, navigated through the maze of obstacles with calculated precision.

As they neared the entrance, Haechan gestured for the team to gather at a secluded spot.

"We need eyes on every angle. Chenle, hack into their system and disable the cameras temporarily" Haechan said through his comms.

"Copy that" Chenle, fingers dancing across his keyboard, initiated a digital dance to blind the watchful eyes above. The flickering lights on the surveillance monitors confirmed his success.

"Good. Let's move"

They finally breached the front entrance, slipping through the shadows like ghosts. The only sounds were the echoes of their cautious footsteps.

As they progressed deeper, Areum's father's presence loomed closer. Haechan guided them toward the heart of the house. The tension escalated with each passing moment, the atmosphere charged with the anticipation of a confrontation that had been building for too long.

Finally, in the dimly lit recesses of the abandoned house, they found someone but it wasn't Areum's father, a figure cloaked in shadows.

"Took you long enough" Jake said, smirking.

"It's us again" Haechan said giving a sarcastic laugh.

"Oh stop with the chit chats, Haechan" With a sudden surge of aggression, Jake lunged at Haechan.

The two adversaries entwined in each other's punches and grapples. The confrontation unfolded, a symphony of tension and history converging in the confined space.

Just as Haechan gained the upper hand, a sudden intrusion disrupted the rhythm of the fight. Jake seized the opportunity and swiftly maneuvered to apprehend Areum.

"We meet again, Areum" Jake said and laughed maniacally.

Areum, caught off guard, maintained her composure.

"Let go of me, Jake!" Areum tried to escape from Jake's grasp.

Just then when Jake had captured Areum, her father finally emerged from the shadows, a smug grin playing on his lips.

"Fancy seeing everyone here" Minwoo said laughing.

"Time to turn yourself in, Minwoo. It's over" Haechan said.

However, defiance still burned in the eyes of Minwoo, his arrogance unyielding.

"You always were a pawn in my game, Haechan" Minwoo said.

"That's it" That was Haechan's last straw.

Fuelled by rage, he raised his gun, his finger tightening on the trigger. Just as he was about to deliver his own brand of justice, Areum's desperate plea cut through the air.

"Haechan, don't!"

Despite her plea, determination hardened in Haechan's gaze. He ignored Areum's words and fired.

Minwoo, that had once held control over their lives crumpled to the ground, a casualty of the long-standing conflict that had finally reached its breaking point.

The shot took Jake by surprise and his grip on Areum loosened. When Areum finally escaped his grip, Haechan took the chance to shoot Jake as well causing him to also crumple to the ground.

Areum immediately ran to her father's body on the ground and stopped the blood from coming out.

"Don't die yet, please. I need you to prove whose side I'm really on!" Areum said desperately.

Her plea, tinged with desperation, hung in the air. She turned behind and saw Haechan standing right behind her. Areum stood up and slapped him.

"Why did you take the shot! That wasn't the fucking plan, Haechan!" Right after Areum said that someone spoke.

"He has no pulse!" Hanni shouted.
