Chapter 11~ Basement confessions.
After the whole argument with Mike in the armpit of his basement, they never resolved it and now he was in California. Dustin and Lucas apologised for not sticking up for her that night and she forgave them. They had actually been spending a lot of time together, especially in school. It was nice.
"Hey guys!" Nancy, Robin and Steve all walked up to Max and Ziggy who were leaning against their lockers, facing each other -or staring at each other should we say-
"Hey-" Ziggy quickly jumped away from Max, "so, we know it's last minute but how would you guys feels about coming over to my house for dinner tonight? No parents of course." Steve asked, "sounds good." Max smiled, "I'm in." Ziggy said, "great, come over at like six."
~
"Wow you're here on time." Steve opened the door to Max and Ziggy, "shut up." Ziggy rolled her eyes, "come in."
"Oh god are we the first here?" Max asked, "sure are." He grinned, "can I get a drink?" Max asked, "I'll come with you." Ziggy grabbed her hand before Steve could even answer.
"What does he have in here?" Max mumbled before looking through different cupboards, "jackpot." She turned around with a bottle of vodka and smirked, "you're planning on getting drunk tonight?" Ziggy questioned.
"Tipsy." She corrected and tilted her head, "well before you do...I uh, wanted to ask about your mom again." Ziggy said quietly, "what about her?"
"She's not looking after you like a mom should." She said bluntly, she wasn't really sure how Max would take that brutal honestly, "yeah- I- I know- but she's working two jobs and you know she's still grieving Billy and-"
"She's still a mother Max. You're not being fed properly, you're not being taken care of-"
"Well your parents aren't saints. Where are they?!" Max lashed out but Ziggy remained calm, she knew it was her defence mechanism. "I'm not arguing with you." Ziggy pulled her into a tight hug, "we're not doing this." She whispered, "I want you to be cared for, you can stay with me whenever you need to."
"I'm sorry." Max pulled away with tears rolling down her cheek, "that was an asshole thing for me to say."
"It's okay." Ziggy gave her a genuine smile, she wasn't upset at what Max said- I mean, it was literally true plus she always said things she didn't mean as a defence mechanism aswell.
"And I might have to take you up on that offer of staying with you." Max let out a sad laugh, "how long does it take to get a drink?" Steve shouted from outside the door making the girls laugh, "let's go before we make momma Steve angry." Ziggy grinned, "vodka first." Max grabbed two glasses and poured more than half in each with the tiniest bit of cola.
"Jesus Max." Ziggy widened her eyes at the amount of vodka, "here." She grinned and passed her a glass.
~
Once everyone had arrived, they were all sat around the table indulging in all the food Steve got, mainly consisting of fried stuff. The conversations were pretty light, luckily no one brought up anything about Mike.
"Dibs on the last slice of pizza." Max put her hand out but Ziggy lightly slapped it, "no way! I already called dibs."
"What are you guys, five?" Robin laughed, "shut up." They said in unison, Max picked up her drink to take a sip out of whilst Ziggy narrowed her eyes, "okay we should play rock paper scissors." Ziggy said with emphasis on the last word, causing Max to snort into her drink, "something wrong Maxine?"
"No-" she looked around awkwardly at the stares the group was giving her, "can you all stop staring?" Max huffed, got up and headed straight to the kitchen.
