Emarie led us inside into the mayors office, a sleek dark room with polished furniture which looked brand new. No one but Billy would have been accustomed to such luxuries.
"Why'd you do that?" I asked, turning to Cass.
"Did you think I was going to leave you? This year we have a shot at us both coming out alive, and even if we didn't I'd still come with you," We'd had a lot of near death experiences running from Peacekeepers, drowning in the dam and hiding from Billy but none bad as the Games.
Emarie came into the room. "Erm, right your families will be here in a second you have 3 minutes with them."
First came in my mother and sister who looked like they had been crying. I was greeted with a warm embrace from Tiffany, "I wish I was young enough to volunteer for you," she sobbed into my dress. It was 2 years ago since Tiffany was 18 and now she worked at the power station. I was now 16 and knew deep down that I would have eventually been reaped someday.
"Don't worry I have Cass," I responded in reassurance.
"Here," Tiffany pulled off the necklace that had once belonged to my father, "You'll need it the most. You can give it back to me when you come back," she smiled at me with a small smile of hope. I smiled back and took it, turning to mother.
"If I come back you have to promise to me you'll get better," I firmly told her, but I didn't think she understood because she started screaming and shrieking.
The Peacekeepers came in, "Times up," one of them said, driving back mine and Cass' families out the door.
I looked at Cass again, "I guess the odds weren't in our favour," he responded with a hug.
"Come on you two, let's not let the Capitol wait for us!" He voice rung out as she reappeared again.
