DISCLAIMER: I haven't done this as much as I should have but PLEASE know that all rights go to STPEHANIE MEYER-not me

I inhaled, smelling the brine of the ocean, stunned by how beautiful the waves were, rolling and crashing on the shore. I wished Bella was her with me, telling me her thoughts on the cold but stunning beach that was almost as perfect as her.

She seemed interested in coming, but the second I mentioned it was in La Push, she said she couldn't make it. When I asked why she went all cryptic. "It's best I stay away from the reservation." She told me before turning on her heel to sit down with her siblings. The Hales immediately leaned over to her and talked intensely to her, almost scolding her. . .

Lauren interrupted my thoughts, walking in a way that was clearly meant to be seductive but looked more like a bad actor trying to do those walking scenes in bad rom-coms.

"So, I see you have plans for the dance." She announced, walking right up to me. I took a small step back so I could have my space. "Would that change if Jessica wasn't the one to ask you out?"

"No, it wouldn't." I told her, shooting a help me look at Angela, who was giggling at the exchange.

"Hmmm. Well Mike's too busy with the person in question to ask you, so I will. We're going to Port Angeles next weekend. The weather should become and stay sunny for quite a long time for Forks and we all want to just mess around and hang out in Port Angeles to soak up the rays." She cocked her head and her voice dropped to a more husky tone. "You really should join us. It may become a weekend trip."

Nope. No way in hell. No. Never. Nuh-uh. She did not just make that implication. What the fuck. Why me?

"Guys! You want to see a blue fire or not?!" Angela screamed from the fire pit that I didn't notice before. Her interruption did its job, stopping the many erratic thoughts in my mind. I brushed past Lauren and sat down next to Angela. "Thanks." I mumbled to her.

"No problem. And seriously, you're going to want to see this." She looked back to Mike, who was holding a good piece of kindling and a lighter. He lit the end of the bark and placed it in the teepee structured fire. A few more burning pieces of kindling and blowing later, I was shocked to see brilliant blue flames lick the three base logs.

"It's the sea salt. Cool, huh?" Mike told me, sitting on my other side.

Soon Lauren got out of her funk because I failed to respond to her question and we all just talked while listening to a DVD on the DVD player Tyler brought and ate chicken subs.

Angela, Jessica, Ben and I went off to see the tide pools, and I have to say those might be my favorite things to look at. The barnacles, starfish, fish and even an eel or two lived in a temporary ecosystem. It was colorful and lively and no matter how much your mind says they're hardly anything. This is boring you can't look away.

A small part of my brain constantly wondered how Bella would react to seeing the tidepools or what smart ass remark she would make during the conversations, but for the most part I enjoyed spending time on the beach with Angela and Ben,who were going on a date tonight and were attending the spring dance together.

When we got back to the fire we saw three boys from the reservation mingling with Mike, Tyler, Eric and Lauren. "Oh, these guys are Jessica, Edward, Angela and Ben." Mike introduced us. He turned fully to us and gestured to each of the guys as he said their names.

"These are Quil, Jacob and Embry. They're from the Quileute tribe." We nodded and taked a little bit. They all seemed nice, a little younger than us and into vehicles, mostly bikes.

As the sky got a little darker the others began playing a few feet in the water or walking along the beach, so it was just me, the boys and Lauren. "This is nice." She commented, her voice a little off, like she was making a joke and about to get to the punch line. She looked pointedly at me as she continued, her voice sweet but foul like vinegar. "Too bad Isabella couldn't come, huh, Edward?"

"Isabella? Like Isabella Cullen?" Quil asked, looking at his friends, who were snickering.

"Yeah." Lauren Said in a hard voice, upset that I couldn't respond. "What's it to you?"

"'The Cullens don't come here.'" Embery said in a deep voice, quoting some unknown source. His voice turned back to normal. "We aren't really supposed to say anything, but the elders don't like the Cullens and they aren't allowed on our lands."

"Why?" I asked as Lauren got up, most likely out of boredom, and stomped off to the others. Maybe they know why Bella reacted to my invitation the way she did.

"Promise not to tell anyone?" Jacob asked, his tone joking but concern swirling in his dark brown eyes.

"Yeah."

Jacob rested his head in his hands, placing his elbows on his knees. "Ok, so our tribe has legends, or old stories, passed down through word of mouth. There are three main ones, two of them connected and told as our tribe's history." He rolled his eyes at the last part.

"The first one is that during the great flood, our ancestors tied their boats to tall trees to survive. The second one claims that we descended from wolves, in a way. It takes a while to explain, but essentially one of the chiefs had to join the spirit and body of a wolf." His voice dropped, and he talked like he was telling a ghost story.

"The one that's relevant to your question." He began, "Starts shortly after the second tale. Members of the tribe would turn into ginormous wolves when they came of age. Our tribe decided those members would act as protectors.

"One day, the wolves came across an overly-sweet scent. They came across a being with pale, cold, hard skin and blazing red eyes. The being looked like a god, with soft waves of light brown hair framing his sculpted face.

"At the man's feet, was the corpse of a villager. Bite marks on they're neck. The wolves were able to kill the man, and later killed a female being, claiming vengeance for her mate."

"And what exactly were the beings?" I asked, shocked at how many similarities there were with his description of these people and the Cullens.

"Cold ones. Otherwise known as vampires." Embry replied.

"Years after the attack, the next generation of wolves came across three cold ones." Jacob said, continuing his story. "The wolves were surprised to see they were drinking the blood of deer, not humans. The cold ones claimed to live off the blood of animals, coming here to live peacefully until they had to move again. Two of them had mates, but they weren't present."

"Not wanting any trouble, they made a truce with the wolves, forming a treaty. If they didn't bite a human and stayed off our lands, we wouldn't tell the pale faces what the cold ones were." Jacob leaned back, proud of himself for telling the story so well. I had a sneaking suspicion, but needed it confirmed.

"How does this connect to the Cullens?" I asked, knowing what the answer would be. Jacob smirked at me.

"They're the same cold ones that we made the treaty with."

I leaned back. I knew that would be his response, but it still shocked me. Could it be true? On one hand, this is impossible, but on the other hand, how would humans know of shit like this was real? There are still people who think the Earth is flat.

So I went home with my mind reeling from the question: Were the Cullens vampires?
