"OK, what's with the face?" Joana asked, sitting down across from me, grabbing the butterknife on the table and spreading the butter on one side of her everything bagel.

I looked up from my bowl of knock off cheerios that I was swirling around with my spoon. "What?" I asked, confused.

"You have that face. The face you make whenever you aren't talking to me. What's on your mind? You've been like this since your first day of school."

I sighed, setting the spoon on the table and supporting my head by placing my hands under my chin and my elbows on the table. "There's this girl, Isabella Cullen. She acted weird when she had to sit next to me in biology. She played it off as having a stomach bug but when I went to drop off a sheet Ms.Cope gave to me, she was trying to switch periods." I explained, remembering her black eyes, filled with anger, frustration, worry and something else. What did I do? "She hasn't been in school since."

"Isabella Cullen? As in one of the Cullen foster kids?" Joana clarified. I nodded. She chuckled. "Well, there's a glitch in the matrix. Isabella is one of the most polite kids in town. All of the Cullens are very polite and well behaved. The police chief, Danny? He and I are good friends and he has never had a problem with those kids. Unlike those other hooligans at that po-dunk high school. You know there was a party involving alcohol this weekend? Promise me you won't ever go to those."

"I promise."

Joana's expression softened. "I'm sure it will be fine, Eddie."

"Eddie?" I snorted.

"Edward is too stuffy-no offense-and as you aunt It's my job to have an annoying nickname to holler in public to embarrass you." Joana explained. I laughed and we talked about everything and nothing, just like usual. Ever since Joana learned I had basically no memories with my parents wanting to spend time with me we spent the weekend in Port Angeles, talking and getting to know each other while exploring the beautiful town.

I headed off to school a while later and suffered through my morning classes. I, as always, was anxious to see if Isabella would show up and the earliest time I would be able to see her would be lunch. "Edward?" Jessica asked as she ran up to me in the hallway while I headed to the cafeteria. Jessica Stanley sat at the same table as me, trying to get Mike's attention. Lately, though, it seemed I was the target. "Yeah, Jessica?" I replied, wondering what she would want.

"I was just thinking maybe we could do something fun, like go to the movies over the weekend?" I looked down at her hopeful expression and felt a twinge of pity. I was not going on a date with Jessica. Or any of the girls at our table, for that matter. "I don't know, Jessica." I replied nonchalantly. "I'm not sure we want to do that for the same reasons."

"What do you mean?" Jessica asked, confused.

"Would this be like a date?" She finally let my tone sink in.

"Do you not want it to be a date?" I just shook my head and met up with Idiot #1 and #2, who I finally learned were actually called Mike and Tyler.

I felt my eyes widen as I saw Isabella at the Cullen table. Her eyes slid over to me for a second and they weren't angry or murderous (the unnamed emotion I finally named during English). Now they were more curious and wary. I knew she looked different, but I couldn't exactly recall what at the moment. I was too surprised she was here.

I went through the line and sat down at my table, smiling and waving at Angela as she passed me, heading over to Isabella. I wanted to watch their interaction, but Ben was eying me speculatively. "What?" I asked, a little annoyed with the tone he had in his glare.

"Are you and Angela a thing?" He asked heatedly.

"What? No! I just talk to her from time to time." I replied. It was true. I had no romantic feelings for Angela and we would talk on our way to biology since she couldn't walk with Isabella.
