Bella dashed over to me, at my side in less than a second, her hand clutching the fabric of my jacket tightly. "Alice what did you see?" Bella asked, her voice low and tense.
"The vampires." Alice choked out. "They're in the area and heard us playing." Carlisle jumped into action, asking Alice for specific details while the others defensively watched the forest around us, forming a circle around me.
I heard Bella cursing under her breath. "Whatever happens, you stay by my side and don't draw attention to yourself." She directed me.
Carlisle, Jasper and Emmett crowded around Bella, who gently nudged me back. Rosalie, Esme and Alice stood around me, trying to keep me from view and in a safe circle. I felt a light pressure around me and knew Bella had spread a shield, or maybe multiple, around our little clump.
"Oh!" A high pitched, feminine voice sounded loudly before us. "What a pleasure!!" A tall vampire emerged from the trees, two men flanking her. "Carlisle! Bella! I thought I saw the last of you in Wyoming!"
"Jinyu." Carlisle greeted, nodding once. "This is our territory. We own a permanent residence here." I was a little surprised Jinyu hadn't noticed me, but the wind was blowing towards us, not her, so she must not smell my blood. I suppose I was pale enough to pass as vampire, anyway. Jasper and Emmet discreetly shuffled closer to each other, hiding me from Jinyu's view.
"Of course. We were only passing through." Jinyu replied with false warmth, her spindly fingers running down her silky smooth black mane. She scowled at a small twig nestled between her strands of hair, flicking it off like it was a slug.
"I have to admit I'm sorry for our last encounter." She continued. "My reaction to your. . .feeding habits. . .was unorthodox. As well as my reaction to Esme." Her red eyes flashed over to the subject of her sentence, and a forced smile spread across her lips. Her eyes finally landed on me, but they quickly flickered away. What?
"Perhaps I-we-could join your little game?" Jinyu finished, her head coking to the side. Carlisle hesitated before smiling.
"Of course." He allowed, "Some of us were leaving. How rude of me to not introduce you to the others. Rosalie, Emmett, Edward and Bella are needed elsewhere." He motioned to us as he said our names, and Bella bit her lip, looking over at Jinyu wearlily. Her eyes flickered over to one of the male vampires and away, her body shrinking into itself.
Rosalie and Emmett mumbled their greetings as they turned towards me, spinning me around and leading me away. Bella walked over to us slowly, going through an obvious strain. She must be trying to spread her shield further so it would still cover the others.
The other vampires walked away deeper into the field, and I thought we possibly would make it to the jeep without any trouble when the wind blew in the opposite direction it had been just a few seconds ago. And it blew right. Into. Jinyu's. Face.
She groaned, the other men immediately stalking over to me. Jasper and Emmett hissed, and all of the Cullens formed a line between me and the small coven. "I should have known you'd cheat on your diet." Jinyu cooed.
"Stay out of it." Bella snarled.
A wicked smile glinted on Jinyu's face. "Oh, how pleasant. You have that same spark in your eyes Mellan carries." The blonde male vampire who had been glancing at Bella smiled in agreement.
"I won't hesitate to mar that pretty face of yours." Bella threatened, dropping to the ground in a fluid, almost seductive, movement. Jinyu chuckled darkly, inhaling the air and my scent. Light flashed in her eyes. "Don't be so naive, child." She muttered before turning into a white flash, running off into the woods. The male vampire who looked related to Jinyu followed immediately, but Mellan kept looking at Bella. A growl from her made him finally move to flee.
