My mind slowly trudged out of the foggy haze of sleep. One of my arms tightened around something, and I remembered what happened yesterday. I just knew I had the most boyish grin on my face as I cracked my eyes open and saw Bella curled up next to me, her face buried in the crook of my neck.
My change in breathing pattern and quickening of my heart rate must have alerted her that I'm awake, but she just gently pressed herself harder against me. I ran a hand down her chocolate locks, kicking my legs out of the many blankets over me. I felt Bella's cold lips twitch in amusement, and I realized cuddling together would not be as comfortable as it was last night if I didn't have a way to trap my body heat.
"I almost thought you were in a coma." Bella stated, her lips teasingly brushing against my skin as she talked. "You slept so hard you didn't notice me wrapping you in a cocoon with those blankets. Thankfully you snore like a chainsaw so I knew you were ok."
I snorted, rolling my eyes. "I do not snore." I told her. Two gold eyes were finally visible, along with a mischievous smile.
"Do you need proof?" Bella asked. I rolled my eyes again, getting up from the bed even though I wanted nothing more than to stay laying next to Bella.
"I'd ask you what you want for breakfast, but. . ." I trailed off.
"Catching a deer surely wouldn't be too much trouble." Bella teased, acting offended I had implied I wouldn't feed her. Her expression became a mix of concern, amusement and frustration. "I probably should change out of this dress and hunt, though. My eyes are nearly dark brown."
I studied her glorious features, and she was right: her gold eyes were tinted with brown, still as beautiful as the honey-gold eyes she acquired after hunting. "You'll come back?" I asked, wondering what the amusement in her eyes was for.
"If you want me to." Bella replied, and I knew she was again giving me the option of cutting her out of my life. I rolled my eyes again, snatching some clothes and heading to the bathroom.
"There's no need for that." Bella told me. "I'm going to go now." I nodded and smiled as she pecked me once on the chin before running off into the forest.
I got dressed and toasted myself a bagel, jumping a little when the house phone rang as I was spreading the butter. I went over to it and picked it up. "Hello?" I asked.
"Edward!" My mothers voice filled my ear. I literally kicked myself to see if I was dreaming. "Edward how have you been? How's school? Do you have any friends?"
"And why do you have a sudden interest in my life?" I asked, my voice too stunned to show any emotion.
"Edward, that's not very polite." Mom scolded me, and I saw red with that comment. Sure, mom, of course I'll take advice from you of all people on what's polite. It's not like you put work before your own son. I took a few breaths, knowing I still should be thankful for having parents, even if they were absentee parents, and tried to be as open as I could be.
"School is fine." I told her, trying to make my tone conversational. "Classes are easy enough and I've made a few friends."
"Anyone specifically that's a good friend?" Mom asked, trying to sound interested. She was focused on something else infront of her.
"Angela and Bella are both nice." I responded, ignoring the other compliments I had for the latter in my mind.
"Girls?" Mom asked, her focus back on me.
"So why are you calling me?" I asked again, trying to change the topic.
"A mother, regardless of her selfish decisions, is allowed to call and check up on her only child, Edward. I know I should not have sent you away when there was no need, but I do not entirely regret the decision, nor do I hate you or not like you. I love you." Mom explained.
